Vail Resorts Director of Workers Compensation in Broomfield, Colorado

Job Summary:

Vail Resorts is seeking a proven, self-motivated, and engaged professional to lead the Workers Compensation function for the Company. The Director of Workers Compensation will be responsible for leading a dynamic team of WC professionals, and partnering with key stakeholders to execute the vision that drives the company’s WC approach. This position will have significant impact on all Vail Resort properties which includes the greatest winter and summer outdoor activities available in one footprint.

As a key member of the H&S team, this leader will participate in many engaging initiatives that will both support Vail Resorts employees, while providing fiscally responsible solutions that benefit the company. This role is responsible for leading and improving upon the Workers Compensation strategy, and guiding the claims procedures to optimize the adjudication of claims.

  • The budgeted range starts at $111,900 - $135,000 + annual bonus + equity. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Job Responsibilities:

The Director of Workers Compensation will:

  • Be responsible for oversight of the WC claims adjudication and subrogation processes for all Vail Resorts lines of business, including managing outside counsel and liaising with internal counsel as necessary.

  • Partner with the H&S Field Operations team as well as Resort Operations to provide visibility and impact to the claims at their resorts, and support development of injury reduction initiatives that will reduce the frequency and/or severity of claims.

  • Develop KPIs specific to the WC function to provide visibility to the claims impact to senior leadership.

  • Develop and track goals for WC related activities including ensuring the best employee experience, return to work strategies, TTD/PPD minimization, cost of claim initiatives, and overall performance management of the WC team objectives.

  • Analyze claim data and trends to identify areas for improvement and implement proactive measures to reduce costs and enhance outcomes.

  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees and managers on workers compensation policies, procedures, and best practices.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, legislative changes, and emerging practices in workers compensation to ensure compliance and drive continuous improvement.

  • Partner with Finance to support all insurance lines, and create a collaborative approach to how Vail Resorts enacts change in our insurance profiles.

  • Develop and present the WC strategy to the Executive Team

  • Develop and partner with key stakeholders to enhance the wellness and care initiatives and programs within the Vail Resorts platform.

Job Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience managing workers' compensation claims

  • 5+ years of experience leading people leaders

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

  • Proven experience in workers compensation claim management, preferably in a multi-state environment, including self-insured and monopolistic states.

  • Proficient in MS Office applications specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Advanced proficiency in analytical skills and understanding claim metrics that impact overall company objectives

  • Demonstrated ability to apply expertise and results in development, implementation and sustainment of enterprise programs

  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation laws, regulations, and best practices.

  • Experience managing at scale in a geographically dispersed, multi-site, matrixed organization

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communication, interpersonal skills, relationship building, consulting, teamwork and leadership

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in an H&S field

  • Professional certification in claims mgmt. or related (CPCU, CWCP, ARM, etc.)

  • Experience within the ski industry, outdoor activities industry, or comparable

The expected Total Compensation for this role is $111,900 - $135,000 + annual bonus + equity. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.

Vail Resorts offers a ‘Hybrid’ work environment for Broomfield-based roles where employees must live within 50 miles of the Broomfield office and work on-site Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and have flexibility to work off-site on Mondays and Fridays.
