[The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides leadership, direction, and planning for a wide variety of medical and related activities for the hospital. This executive serves as the liaison and resource to management on matters pertaining to medical staff activities. The hospital CMO is committed to the mission of quality, safety, service, and improvement of patient clinical outcomes. He/she is a leader in promoting physician performance in these areas. In addition, the CMO conducts clinical quality review on cases referred by case management staff and/or other health care professionals in accordance with the hospital\'s objectives for assuring quality patient care and effective, efficient utilization of health care services, and to meet regulatory requirements. He/she meets with case management and health care team members to discuss selected cases and make recommendations for care and interacts with medical staff members and medical directors of third party payers to discuss the needs of patients and alternative levels of care.
