POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting a Journeyman Structural Welder to work at our Shepard Shop (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6).  The Journeyman Structural Welder has a crucial role working primarily in the production area, welding components, and sub-assemblies for the Structural Department. Reporting to the Structural Supervisor, the Structural Welder will read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and diagrams to determine the layout and configuration for our welding projects. The Structural Welder will use their expertise for the precise fabrication and welding of structural components used in various projects. This multifaceted role combines technical expertise, precision craftsmanship, and a deep commitment to safety, making it an indispensable part of Startec’s everyday operations.  If you are selected for an interview, please be prepared to complete a Weld Test on the day of your interview. Shift Schedule - 4:30-2:20 (4 days/week,10 hours/day). Overtime is as required. 

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

STRUCTURAL WELDING AND QUALITY ASSURANCE (Weighting 70%) Welding Operations

  • Perform welding processes using appropriate techniques and filler metals for various metals and project requirements.

  • Follow welding procedures, industry standards, and project requirements.

  • Assist in preparing quality control documentation and records.

  • Conduct visual inspections to detect weld defects and ensure integrity.

    Weld Planning & Inspection

  • Ensure welded joints meet quality standards through thorough inspections.

  • Inspect materials visually before welding to verify specifications.

  • Plan weld placements and alignment based on designs and safety guidelines.

  • Verify that welded components meet engineering drawings and tolerances.

    MATERIAL CONTROL (Weighting 30%) Materials Management

  • Receive, inspect, and organize incoming materials for inventory control.

  • Manage materials, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project specifications.

    Workplace safety

  • Handle hazardous materials according to safety protocols.

  • Wear proper PPE and secure workpieces for safe welding operations.

  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations for a safe work environment.

  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation measures.

  • Stay updated on industry practices and safety guidelines.

    COLLABORATION (Weighting 30%)                             Technical Guidance

  • Interpret blueprints and project specifications for welding tasks.

  • Maintain and repair equipment to prevent breakdowns.

  • Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues.

  • Mentor junior technicians and support training programs.

  • Seek continuous improvement in work processes and skills through training programs.

    Interdepartmental Coordination

  • Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders for effective project execution.

  • Act as a liaison between departments to resolve technical issues.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and other semiautomatic wire feed welding processes.

  • 3+ years experience in structural welding components.

  • Previous experience working in an O&G manufacturing environment

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex piping issues.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.

  • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices related to pipefitting work.

  • Good physical condition and stamina to perform manual labor and work in various conditions.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
