Mount Auburn Hospital is a Primary Stroke Service site, an AHA 2023 Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus honoree for stroke care, and provides emergent cardiac catheterization in our Zir Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. The Department is immediately adjacent to the Radiology, OR, and Invasive Cardiology Departments, facilitating strong collaborations to provide patients with timely, extraordinary care. We care for patients with emergency care needs throughout the spectrum of life from pediatrics to older adults.

NURSE MANAGER

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing for Emergency Services, provides 24-hour operational accountability for the Emergency Department. Collaborates with the Director, Medical Director, and other nursing leaders to develop and oversee a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, and a high performing work environment for all staff. The manager is responsible for all staff related matters, and operating the unit within budgetary guidelines, while continuing to enhance quality patient care.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the effective selection, development and ongoing performance management of staff, to ensure the right talent is in place to achieve staff experience, clinical, patient experience, quality and financial goals.

  • Serves as a role model for excellence in leadership, standards of behavior and performance and service excellence.

  • Supports the unit staff (Nurses, PCAs, Secretaries, service associate) in the identification of patient care priorities and promotes the development of critical thinking skills in the clinical areas.

  • Provide oversight to staff managing routine day to day operations of the Emergency Department, including knowledge of key operations.

  • Assists the team in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care. Serves as an internal consultant for difficult and/or complex patient care needs.

  • Promote staff retention.

  • Supports shared decision-making through unit based council.

  • Partners with the Director to prepare and monitor unit budgets and prepares variance reports and plans for budget adherence, as needed.

  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team, participates in the development and implementation of standards of nursing care practice. Utilizes knowledge of nursing research to support and advance professional nursing practice. Critically analyzes research studies in area of specialization to justify inclusion/exclusion of findings into practice. Advances professional nursing practice through publication and/or membership participation in professional nursing organizations and best practice research.

  • Represents the nursing discipline and/or own unit on hospital-wide committees and or initiatives.

  • Directly and/or through collaboration the Director, ensures all credentials including, but not limited to licensure, certifications, trainings, and competencies are maintained in accordance with the appropriate regulatory and/or hospital requirements.

  • Provide resources and guidance to support the utilization of evidence based practice standards.

  • Reviews all incident reports, restraint and seclusion forms for completeness and clarity of the episode/problem. Report all negative outcomes of such episodes, in a timely manner, to quality and safety and problem solve with other managers to prevent further negative outcomes.

  • In collaboration with nursing and physician leadership, is accountable for the development, implementation and oversight of quality improvement plans with a focus on operational and service excellence and an objective to meet and/or exceed benchmarks in key areas.

  • Identifies staff educational needs and supports the planning, development and implementation of educational programs in collaboration with the nurse educator and Quality and Safety to meet those needs. Accepts responsibility for identifying and meeting own educational needs.

  • Participates in the development and implementation of strategic nursing division goals and department/unit specific goals.

  • Maintains effective open communication across all areas to ensure alignment of programs, services, outcomes.

  • Identifies key drivers in throughput process and continuously evaluates care processes and patient outcomes to inform potential opportunities for improvement.

  • Participates in the educational experiences of students on clinical rotations through affiliated schools.

  • Maintains thorough understanding of hospital policies and protocols, and practices within those policies and protocols, and ensures compliance. Demonstrates competency with all regulatory expectations and guidelines (i.e. DMH, DPH, BORM, BORN, Joint Commission).

  • Participates in the development and implementation of standards, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures across all areas, which facilitate quality patient care, creative professional practice and meets all requirements of state and federal agencies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Current, full, active and unrestricted licensure from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

  • Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required. BSN required. Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare/Business Administration preferred

  • 3 - 5 years of related work experience required and 1-3 years of progressively more responsible leadership experience required.

  • BLS and ACLS certification required, other specialty specific certifications preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with EHRs (EPIC preferred), MS Office applications required.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
