The Salvation Army After School Counselor in Camden, New Jersey
Overview
The After School Counselor is responsible to supervise a group of students, along with a Program Attendant, during activities, teach literacy and other classes in the areas of arts, STEM and recreation, maintain daily attendance records, incident reports and progress reports, provide discipline and structure for students in the group, comply with all safety policies and procedures, communicate with the After School Coordinator daily regarding any issues related to students, parents or staff.
Responsibilities
Supervise students, assuring their safety and engagement in activities.
Maintain attendance, incident reports and behavioral and academic records for students in the grouup.
Teach literacy, STEM, arts and recreation classes based on curriculum outlines provided or developed with the After School Coordinator.
Implement the discipline policies and procedures in a timely manner.
Comply with safety and security procedures, including drills and safety checks.
Communicate with students, staff, parents/guardians in a respectful manner.
Properly use supplies and equipment, communicating needs of repairs and supplies as needed.
Participate in developing assets in children, including participating in regular staff training.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
TB test or chest x-ray with insignificant results.
Physical clearing employee to work.
Fingerprinting and background check.
Must provide three (3) references.
18 years of age; some college coursework completed (2 years preferred).
Minimum one (1) year prior experience working with children of varied ages and abilities, including special needs.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
Exercise mature judgement and sound decision making.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Keeps calm in emergency or confrontation situations.
Adhere to and ensure adherence to all The Salvation Army Kroc Corps Community Center policies and procedures as stated in manuals and all subsequent trainings and meetings.
Supervise youth and present positive role modeling through all transactions with program participants.
Maintain all supplies, equipment and materials; inform the After School Coordinator when new/additional supplies are needed.
Ability to keep confidences, loyalties and practice professionalism.
Be reliable and dependable.
Role model dignity and respect for others at all times. Actively participate, while encouraging children, in programs and activities.
Work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing/planning needs.
Learn, follow and enforce all Salvation Army Kroc policies and regulations.
