How will you make an impact?

This role is in the Manufacturing Engineering team as a Controls Engineer to provide engineering support for moderate to complex high-speed automated equipment which are primarily used in liquid filling and gels manufacturing. Support includes equipment sustaining and process improvement activities for existing equipment, as well as preparation of specification, planning, designing, programming, testing, installation of new or upgraded equipment. The goals include meeting all corporate goals and quality commitments goals. This position provides opportunity to develop professionally, work on new projects, and assume increasing levels of responsibility. This is a hands-on role which requires specific skillsets and experience in understanding how to apply hardware engineering concepts for Production use.

What will you do?

  • Perform automation, electrical and controls engineering services for existing and new equipment installed within Thermo Fisher Carlsbad manufacturing facility.

  • Scope of work includes electrical and controls engineering activities from design through installation, testing and qualification of equipment.

  • Projects may include new equipment, existing equipment upgrades, capacity expansions, equipment replacement as well troubleshooting existing issues to improve productivity and quality.

  • Review and approve vendor provided document package including but not limited to drawings, manuals, and validation protocols as they relate to equipment controls systems.

  • Perform PLC/HMI/PC/vision code review and approval. Recommend and/or implement improvements to enhance performance and reliability.

  • Proficient in writing new code or modifying existing PLC/HMI/PC/Vision software to enhance or expand functionality, and reliability. Proficient in writing new or modifying existing data collection software using commercially available data collection and HMI packages.

  • Working knowledge of different types of servos systems, sensors and devices is required.

  • Manage assigned project to ensure projects are completed on-time and within budget.

  • Hands on investigation and troubleshooting of manufacturing equipment issues is required.

How will you get here?

Education:

  • Minimum required education: Bachelor of Science in engineering, or related technical field.

Experience:

  • 2 or more years’ experience developing PLC/HMI programs for automated equipment is required.

  • Prior experience troubleshooting electrical issues of automated production equipment is required.

  • Prior experience in electrical panel build, developing and commissioning factory automated equipment.

  • Motion control and robotics experience preferred.

  • Experience developing and deploying multi axis robots into a high-volume manufacturing. environment is highly desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work in Team environment across multiple functional groups.

  • Previous technical training or Beckhoff Automation experience preferred.

  • Experience with programming languages IEC 61131-3 (object-oriented extension), C#, etc. HTML5, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++ knowledge a plus.

  • Strong familiarity with electro-mechanical equipment design and development process.

  • Medical Devices automation experience is desired but not required.

  • Detail oriented and organized.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $91,700.00–$138,000.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
