Fixed Equipment Corrosion & Materials Engineer
Job Summary
The Los Angeles Refinery has an opening for a Fixed Equipment Corrosion & Materials Engineer at our Carson, California. The Fixed Equipment Corrosion & Materials Engineer will address issues which impact the mechanical availability of fixed equipment and provide solutions which maximize the mechanical integrity and reliability of the fixed equipment and piping. This position will form the “strategic” portion of the Inspection group. The schedule for the position is Monday - Thursday (either 6 AM- 4 PM or 6:30 AM - 4:30 PM) after hours calls can be answered over the phone and they can occur approximately 2 times a month depending on unit issues and support of TAR once or twice a year is required.
Key Responsibilities
• Work with the area inspectors/Engineers on field findings to help determine damage mechanisms and make recommendations for inspection interval changes, replacements, or upgrades aligned with corporate guidance and cost effectiveness.• Initiate and/or participate in corrosion studies/DMR to assist in solving material degradation problems.• Provide engineering support for the Mechanical Integrity Program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: API 579 fitness for service evaluations, API 510 support, API 570 support, API 653 support, API 580/581 support, and various other metallurgical engineering items, including codes and standards.• Work with Technical Services personnel on unit issues and concerns which impact unit mechanical integrity and reliability, with regards to metallurgy and identifiable damage mechanisms.• Participate as a Member of the Corporate Advisory Groups.• Create and manage division’s Corrosion Monitoring Documents, Corrosion Study, Integrity Windows to monitor and improve Fixed Equipment Mechanical Integrity.• Support the Inspection Group on daily needs with respect to field findings from both planned and unplanned events.• Work with Area Team members, inspectors and Engineers to help broaden their understanding of the fixed equipment reliability issues which play a role in each unit.• Utilize personnel from Inspection, Maintenance, Engineering, Tech Service, and Area Teams into the problem-solving process - as required - in order to identify areas of concern and make recommendations to support the fixed equipment reliability improvement goals.• Work with the Area Teams and cost control personnel to ensure that all recommended fixed equipment upgrades are included in the budget plans. • Make recommendations on new fixed equipment designs during project development in order to improve and ensure the reliability of the equipment. This can include but is not limited to drawing reviews and shop inspections.• Support purchasing and engineering functions by reviewing fabrication drawings for proper material selection and design and reviewing fabrication drawings per the applicable codes and standards.• Provide support for Risk Based Inspection analyses, reviews, and recommendations.• Work with the Turnaround Planning Group to ensure the turnaround plans help achieve the fixed equipment reliability improvement goals, which includes the repair and replacement of fixed equipment. Support discovery scope resolution to mitigate damage mechanisms.• Select and conduct focused reliability improvement programs that highlight chronic bad actors, identify long-term investment needs for the area teams, and solve systemic type problems.• Perform or manage Fitness for Service and remaining life calculations per applicable RAGAGEP.• Manage heat exchanger tube bundle life cycle analysis program to make recommendations for bundle testing or replacement timing based on life cycle and potential lost opportunity costs.• Perform assigned incident investigations and completing recommended action items pertaining to fixed equipment, providing a thorough analysis and sound recommendations.• Review applicable Operations procedures and revisions.• Engage in the maintenance procedure development and review process.• Engage in the review of fixed equipment engineering specifications and standard practices to identify and recommend changes if needed.• Train in the required areas of responsibility as identified by the FEMI Maintenance Supervisor.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in Materials, or Corrosion Engineering or other related field. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
Must have a minimum of 8 years post degree experience in fixed equipment reliability or corrosion/metallurgy engineering, preferably in the refining, petrochemical or manufacturing industry.
Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.
Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)
Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.
Travel Requirement is 5% or less.
