Director of Public Relations

 

The Director of Public Relations is responsible for all of SUU's earned media attention which will be accomplished by developing and implementing a public relations campaign, establishing strong media relationships, overseeing SUU's Expert Directory, protecting the reputation of SUU and managing special projects the Marketing Communication Office is involved in. The PR Director will work closely with several campus departments including Alumni and Community Relations, Student Affairs, Admissions and Advancement.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Develop public relations and strategic communications campaigns that elevate the reputation and brand of Southern Utah University locally, regionally and nationally.

• Build strong media relations with news outlets and create specific and effective media contact lists for a variety of topics and beats. Monitor media activity on a daily basis and manage monthly media reports.

• Help with crisis communication and develop media trainings for administration, faculty and staff.

• Supervise and train writing team. Help write and edit marketing materials including news stories, talking points, brochures, blogs, press kits, internal emails and content for special projects.

• Maintain SUU's Expert Directory, manage expert inquiries and contacts, and write and pitch expert spotlights. Research latest industry trends and best practices.

• Act as SUU's GRAMA officer, monitor all incoming requests and manage responses. Oversee and track SUU trademarks.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

 

• Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.

• Six to ten years proven public relations experience.

• Essential to have current knowledge of public relations, content development, and crisis management.

• Necessary to possess strong leadership, organizational, planning and analytical skills and demonstrate ability to solve problems and work as a leader and team player.

• Necessary to develop and implement media outreach opportunities by creating and distributing press releases, traveling to regional markets and responding to media requests, as well as coordinating television and radio appearances.

• Strong editorial and proofreading skills.

• Must be involved with internal and external communications to provide effective and accurate communication strategies, messages, and goals for a variety of audiences.

• Ability to analyze efforts and develop measurement tools for success.

• Must be able to plan, organize, and execute special events and serve on appropriate university and community committees.

• Necessary to be able to multi-task and have experience fostering a collaborative, diverse and proactive team environment.
