Hiring Range is $59,072 to $71,424 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Manager of Forestry, Trails and Open Space, this position is responsible for the supervision and direction of the daily activities of a maintenance crew including full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff. The Maintenance Supervisor oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of assigned open space. Is responsible for identifying, planning, prioritizing, scheduling, coordinating, assigning and evaluating projects and personnel associated with all aspects of maintenance, which may include, but is not limited to ponds and lakes, fences and retaining walls, open spaces, shelters, bridges, and public restrooms. Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises the daily work activities of full-time, part-time, and seasonal personnel. Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff. Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations. Works with employees to correct deficiencies. Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organizational policy.

  • Determines staffing needs, oversees the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of assigned staff, and provides backup support as needed. Reviews and approves employee bi-weekly timesheets. Works directly with Payroll to resolve any pay issues.

  • Administers and adheres to District policies. Assists in preparing, enforcing, maintaining, and modifying policies and procedures manuals that comply with local, state and national regulations. Conducts periodic staff meetings to provide and gather information; answers questions and responds to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally.

  • Ensures the safety of users and keeps District liability risks at a minimum by properly maintaining assigned areas within the current safety specifications.

  • Oversees or performs regular inspections of assigned areas which may include grounds, fences, weed control efforts, drainage ways, open space areas, bridges, trails, and bodies of water. Initiates proper maintenance activities.

  • Exercises good judgment and proper safety precautions and practices at all times.

  • Conducts or coordinates and documents training of personnel in techniques for safe and efficient operation of equipment, tools, machinery, work methods, and chemical applications. When required, ensures staff maintain proper certifications in accordance with the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

  • Assists Manager with developing division goals and objectives.

  • Schedules and assists with work orders from other departments.

  • Assists with preparing and monitoring the budget, managing revenues and expenditures, and preparing financial reports. Prepares bid documents, purchase orders, RFPs, and invoice requests; purchases, maintains and inventories materials and supplies. Works with vendors to ensure proper delivery and quality of materials and services. Prepares short and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, checks revenue streams, etc. Develops and implements strategies to increase usage of assigned areas.

  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with District employees, vendors, citizens, and various outside user groups to coordinate their programs and special events.

  • Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner to inquiries, complaints, and problems in person, through email, phone and mail by providing helpful information and explanations in-line with District policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handles confrontational or stressful interactions.

  • Coordinates the scheduling of maintenance activities with Manager, other Maintenance Supervisors, other District staff as necessary, and outside contractors engaged in construction/renovation projects within District open space and trails.

  • Oversees snow removal activities including plowing, shoveling, and applying ice melt at assigned areas which may include parking lots and trail systems.

  • Assesses vandalism; fills out reports, contacts police.

  • Assists with specials events in the areas of logistics, personnel, and material needs.

  • Maintains and cares for assigned tools and equipment including trenchers, pickup truck, trailer, compressor, etc. Maintains and routinely inventories parts and materials used while performing maintenance duties. Schedules crews to maintain, repair and restore machinery, equipment and facilities.

  • Keeps accurate records including personal timecard, daily activity reports, incident/accident reports, and inventory logs according to District procedures in a timely manner.

  • Conducts periodic observations and documentation involving decisions on the removal, prescription, renovation, repair or new design of assigned areas which may include trails, parking lots, open spaces, lakes and ponds.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, orientations, and meetings on safety, District projects, pesticides, capital construction, etc.

  • May be required to assume manager’s duties and responsibilities or to assist with additional supervisory duties in manager’s absence.

  • Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

  • May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays; may be required to work shifts deviating from this position’s normal workdays; and may be assigned to work with other work groups.

  • May be responsible for monitoring snow conditions and determining emergency snow response; may be responsible for scheduled on-call emergency response.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age.

  • Associate degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.

  • Four (4) years’ related maintenance experience which includes one (1) year of supervisory experience.

  • Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s License as a Qualified Supervisor in the relevant categories: Rangeland Pest Control; Outdoor Vertebrate Control; and Industrial & Right-of-Way categories preferred, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year from the date of hire.

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

  • Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) is preferred

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of or willingness and ability to learn about equipment, materials, techniques, and supplies used in the maintenance, construction, and supervision of trails and open space, which may include, but is not limited to ponds and lakes, fences and retaining walls, parking facilities, shelters, bridges, and public restrooms.

  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of equipment used in the maintenance and repair of assigned areas.

  • Skills and ability to document daily maintenance activities, keep accurate work logs and reports, design and implement traffic and pedestrian detour plans, and conduct and correct jobsite hazard analysis.

  • Skill in welding and fabrication.

  • Knowledge of the proper use of chemicals and their applications.

  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize situations and goals to maximize available resources.

  • Problem solving skills to analyze complex problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.

  • Knowledge of budget planning and management.

  • Skills in recruiting, training, supervising, evaluating, and motivating employees.

  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.

  • Skill and ability to use and enforce all applicable work safety rules, procedures and equipment.

  • Ability to work productively without supervision within established policies and procedures.

  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, irrigation blueprints, and instructional materials.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project and Internet Explorer.

  • Ability to interpret and evaluate the work of staff effectively.

  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide outstanding customer service, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and interact with others in a professional manner.

  • Excellent communication skills to understand oral and written instructions; to express facts, data, and ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; and to develop, facilitate and lead presentations.

Material and Equipment Used:

  • Regularly uses maintenance equipment which may include but is not limited to: mower, trimmer, athletic field striper, various hand tools, tractors and implements (seeder, ripping and tilling implements, large agricultural mowers, front end mowers, etc.), tandem / single axle trucks with manual or automatic transmissions and trailers, pesticide/herbicide application equipment, fertilizers, chemical sprayers, welding equipment, painting equipment, de-icing salts, excavation and civil construction equipment, snow blower, and snow plow truck.

  • Regularly uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, phone, calculator, printer, and photo copier.

  • This position regularly drives a District and/or personal motor vehicle to various District facilities.

Working Environment:

  • Regularly requires strenuous work outdoors with exposure to a variety of weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscapes.

  • This position has regular exposure to adverse conditions such as dust, noise, wildlife, chemicals, extreme temperatures, ultra-violet radiation, precipitation, and may include unlit or low light night-time activities.

  • This position also performs work in an office environment subject to interruptions and background noises.

Physical Requirements:

  • Extended periods spent performing manual labor and standing, walking, sitting.

  • Occasional physical work lifting up to 100 pounds.

  • Required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

  • May occasionally climb, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate tools, machinery, personal computer and equipment.

  • Foot/eye coordination required for operating motorized equipment.

  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Vision acuity to see close-up and at a distance with the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision.

  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain clear and effective communication. Must understand and be understood.
