Wolfram Research, Inc. Systems Administrator in Champaign, Illinois

Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and Wolfram Language, has an exciting opportunity for a Systems Administrator. The company is looking for an energetic, motivated individual with strong interpersonal and communications skills to work on a wide variety of issues while maintaining server infrastructure. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes pride in their work and achievements. Responsibilities

  • Managing day-to-day tasks, including the documentation of projects

  • Maintaining, patching, troubleshooting and administrating production Linux/Mac/Windows-based servers running a variety of different software applications

  • Implementing new technologies to help streamline internal operations

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as necessary, including being on call and after hours

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of Linux operating systems with a focus on RHEL-based distributions, such as Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Fedora, CentOS Stream, etc.

  • Strong understanding of networking concepts, technologies and principles

  • Familiarity with various scripting languages, such as Bash, Python, PowerShell, Perl, etc.

  • Strong understanding of virtual machine environments and hypervisors

  • Working knowledge of services that provide directory management, database management and configuration management, such as Active Directory, LDAP and DNS

  • Excellent problem-solving, critical-thinking and documentation skills

  • Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment

Preferred qualifications

  • Three to five years of experience in Systems Administration

  • Demonstrable ability to build production-focused services

  • Familiarity with containerization (e.g. Kubernetes)

  • Awareness of concepts such as NAS, OOBM, MFA, VPN, etc.

  • Familiarity with enterprise hardware and datacenter environments

  • Enthusiasm for experimenting with unique projects (e.g. homelab, Raspberry Pi, ESXi, Proxmox, etc.)
