CITY OF CHAMPLIN Mechanic in Champlin, Minnesota

POSITION SUMMARY The Mechanic is responsible for performing a wide range of preventive maintenance, repair, and part replacement on all municipally owned and operated equipment, both diesel and gas. This position ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the City's fleet, including vehicles and heavy equipment. This role involves snow plowing and removal operations during winter months to maintain City infrastructure and ensure public safety. The position performs a variety of skilled technical duties and mechanical labor to ensure the operational integrity and performance of all municipal equipment and processes. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Works closely with the Lead Mechanic to implement and manage a proactive preventative maintenance program for all City-owned equipment. Conducts routine inspections and evaluations of all municipal equipment, identifying any potential issues or deficiencies to minimize downtime and extend the service life of the fleet. Performs necessary repairs, adjustments, or part replacements to ensure equipment is operating at optimal levels. Accurately and timely records all maintenance, repairs, and parts replacements in the Fleet Management Computer Software system to maintain comprehensive and up-to-date service history and maintenance records to support operational audits and compliance with regulatory requirements. Performs complex service work and diagnostics on various vehicle and equipment systems, including fuel, hydraulic, engines, electrical, exhaust, suspension, steering, braking, drivetrain, and transmission systems. Fabricates parts and mountings using welding techniques and install necessary accessories and components on City equipment. Ensures a safe, organized, clean, and efficient work environment by maintaining tools, equipment, and the shop area. Informs the Lead Mechanic of any significant issues or concerns, including equipment malfunctions, part shortages, or safety hazards. Ensures that the Lead Mechanic has all the necessary information to make timely and effective decisions. Provides recommendations regarding the purchase, replacement, or disposal of equipment and parts based on the evaluation of equipment conditions. Remains current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and new developments in equipment maintenance, parts design, and repair techniques. Provides recommendations on methods and practices to improve the maintenance process, increase efficiency, and reduce costs in City operations. Assists with snow plowing and removal operations during winter months to ensure the safety and accessibility of City streets, parks, and other public spaces. Operates all City vehicles and equipment as necessary for maintenance and repair purposes. Assists in training other employees on the safe operation of City equipment, as well as proper maintenance and care procedures. Manage projects and repairs as directed and perform other duties assigned. KNOWELDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Ability to process information and react appropriately in emergency situations. Ability to provide services in accordance with government standards and City policies. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with the general public, customers, businesses, and staff while displaying political agility and discretion. Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications, read and comprehend written instructions from schematic diagrams, technical manuals, procedures, and safety documents. Knowledge of methods and techniques used in the maintenance of gas and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles, including those used for street, park, and public facility construction, maintenance, and repair. Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems and perform repairs on a wide variety of vehicle and equipment systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, suspension, electrical systems, and more. Ability to effecti ely plan and allocate the use of personnel, tools, and equipment to ensure the timely completion of tasks and the efficient use of resources. Knowledge of occupational safety standards and procedures related to vehicle and equipment maintenance, as well as environmental regulations and compliance requirements for public sector operations. Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records using Fleet Management Computer Software to track maintenance schedules, repairs, inventory, and other key data related to the City s fleet. Ability to adapt to flexible working hours to ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks on City equipment. Skilled in operating all City vehicles and equipment, with a demonstrated ability to acquire and maintain required certifications.
