This position has the with opportunity to work independently and with many different teams throughout the mammals and bird areas. The primary goals and daily tasks of this position are to ensure that all animal facilities and critical animal care equipment are fully functional and maintained. AFS team members report to the[[ Assistant Curator of Marine Mammals and Birds but may also work under the guidance of area Managers or other special projects staff. This position works closely with the Animal Welfare Specialist in each area to safely perform routine facility maintenance as well as new project construction and may assist with animal care duties as needed. This may include but is not limited to clearing sargassum and growth on fence lines using SCUBA and underwater high pressure scrubbing tools, power tools, climbing ladders and performing shade canopy maintenance, etc. Problem solve and work to find improved solutions to maintenance challenges in the ocean environment. Basic maintenance skills. Learn to assist AWS team with animal procedures as needed. Frequently perform physically demanding tasks in potentially hazardous or harsh environments above and below the water. Work in proximity with large wild animals and follow established protocols consistently. Assist with various cleaning and maintenance duties in the marine mammal and/or birds work areas. This includes handling chemicals for cleaning pool enclosures, assisting with filtration operations, and conducting water quality tests. Assists as needed with animal training sessions.
