Note this position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.

The Engineer III position is the advancing level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with even greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

The Senior Engineer position is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years. Position will be part of the Substation Engineering - Civil Team.

Job Summary (Substation - Civil)

This position is part of the Substation Engineering group and is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 500kV. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs.

The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc. Ensures that the substation facility meets all applicable safety and environmental regulations, including storm water and Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) requirements. Perform, or manage consultants to perform, site design activities associated with new or modified substation facilities. This includes determining cut/fill for a grading plan, determining impervious additions and calculating water flow for erosion control and storm water control. Track and obtain various regulatory permits necessary for construction activities, including erosion control, building, driveway, storm water, CAMA, other environmental and local/municipal certificates. The position will also provide design support to field personnel during project construction.

Job Responsibilities (Substation – Civil)

  • Responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 500kV

  • Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications – Engineer III

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 4 plus years of minimum required related experience

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Basic Qualifications – Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Five plus years of minimum required related experience with a current P.E. OR six plus years of required related experience without a current P.E.

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering.

  • Proficient in principles of project management.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

  • Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

  • Experience in the Electric Utility Industry

  • Experience in electric utility substation structural designs

  • Experience in site development and stormwater runoff designs

  • Experience with permitting (NCDEQ, SCDHEC, Local Entities in the Carolinas)

  • Experience with SPCC design

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

  • Experience with AutoCAD 2022 or newer

  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 or newer

  • Experience with Mathcad

  • Experience with LPILE foundation design software or similar

  • Experience with structural design codes such as ASCE 7, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE MOP 113, NESC,

  • Experience with structural modelling and analysis software (i.e. RISA, STAAD)

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Previous power system engineering experience

  • Professional Engineer Certifications/License
