Job Description

U.S. Bank is seeking a Principal Software Engineer and Payments domain leader to work on core systems modernization and payments data platform delivery . They will understand the delicate balance between legacy platforms and new systems to manage stability. They know what it takes to embark on a modernization journey, building next-generation, data-driven transactions-processing platforms by decomposing the monoliths into logical, functional business components architected with cloud ready microservices architecture. Must be hands on delivery lead with executive presence and ability to manage stakeholders and competing priorities. A leader in this space must be well versed with importance of operational needs, complexity of legacy and ability to leverage engineering frameworks and a data-driven approach for delivery, transformation, and excellence. This leader will also drive the Payments Data Mart build, our AI/ML work bench for customer and product level reporting and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Sets the direction of platform and product expansion while assisting the team in aligning platform, product & architecture roadmaps to business requirements.

  • Establishes engineering strategic objectives that drive architecture and technical approach.

  • Executes product roadmap on-time and within budget and ensures security and relevant compliance of core systems.

  • Coaching engineers to have a debugging mindset with a view of using the appropriate tools for specific needs. Leading incident response across the engineering organization as needed.

  • Drives the organizational testing strategy and uses quality metrics to identify gaps. Works with all teams to recommend solutions that are in accordance with testing frameworks.

  • Identifies dependencies across the organization and works with individual teams to resolve them and installs preventative measures to mitigate repeat occurrences.

  • Identifies and manages technical and business risk.

  • Takes ownership of decisions made; helping teams make clear decisions in alignment with enterprise goals, backing decisions made, and taking responsibility for their success.

  • Works across the organization to foster a culture where we:

  • Utilize applicable and relevant design patterns in anticipation of future use cases.

  • Make design decisions that minimize the cost of future changes.

  • Have quality and timely code reviews while encouraging teams to consider release complications.

  • deliver features with minimal disruption to production.

  • Set priorities and urgency in alignment with organizational strategy, making trade-offs where needed and managing technical debt.

  • Follow standards and aim for best practices.

  • Work to keep skills up to date.

  • Have a security first mindset.

  • Understand the importance of the methodology have a clear point of view on improvements needed to the delivery process.

  • Clarify expectations with all parties involved.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience

  • 10 or more years of relevant experience

  • Willingness to be a hands-on leader, spending up to 50% of time coding, 25% on app design/architecture/strategy, and 25% on team & stakeholder management

  • Willing to travel 10-15% of the time

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Deep understanding of U.S. domestic payment rails (Check, ACH, WIRES, SWIFT, ISO 20022) across both legacy and faster payments

  • Deep understanding of data platform engineering & capabilities

  • Has led major transformation plans (legacy system deep-dive, roadmap creation and execution of roadmap)

  • Exposure to latest technologies in cloud engineering, open frameworks, AI/ML

  • Possesses expertise in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices in an agile environment

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills

  • Proven collaboration and influencing skills

Location Expectations

The role offers a hybrid/flexible schedule, which means there's an in-office expectation of 3 or more days per week and the flexibility to work outside the office location for the other days.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. In addition to salary, U.S. Bank offers a comprehensive benefits package, including incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase 401(k) contribution and pension (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). Pay Range: $165,325.00 - $194,500.00 - $213,950.00
