CBC P.E.I. is looking for a reporter/editor to join our team.

This position is based in Charlottetown, P.E.I. The regular hours for this shift are Monday to Friday, 5:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

This role requires full time on site presence.

Your role

The successful candidate ensures that the CBC P.E.I. owned/operated website and other platforms are up to date first thing in the morning and that any breaking or developing news content is reflected.

You will be chasing the news of the day -- and your role could include going live on radio, updating web content or handling a live hit on television or a streaming channel.

You maintain exceptional skill in writing, editing and packaging for online. You are also able to write, edit or perform content for radio or video platforms.

You are knowledgeable about CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. You demonstrate initiative and independent judgment.

You are part of a team and close cooperation with the rest of the newsroom is essential.

Key Tasks:

  • Writes, edits, packages, and publishes digital content — including text stories, video content and audio — clearly and concisely.

  • Curates the local landing page.

  • Curates the news wheel for the local FAST streaming channel.

  • Ensures the website and stories adhere to the priorities of the day.

  • Chases developing and breaking news.

  • Coordinates with the rest of the newsroom, including our assignment desk and morning radio team.

  • Re-writes material as necessary to make it more relevant to the platform.

  • Selects photos and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.

  • Edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.

  • Prepares and writes articles and headlines from information provided by reporters, wire copy, or original sources.

  • Decides which elements should be included in an item, their order, length and sequence. Creates elements as required.

  • Contributes and pitches ideas or program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives for both local and national pages.

Qualifications

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • Two years of reporting experience, including proven knowledge of digital publishing trends and content management systems.

  • Knowledge of reporting and writing daily news stories.

  • Ability to change and adapt to a changing media landscape.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, and to coach and help others who are not primarily assigned to digital.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and under deadlines.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Knowledge of the political & cultural landscape of P.E.I. would be an asset.
