Location: Onsite-Cheltenham.

Basic Function

You will be responsible for ensuring that the engineering specifications of new and existing purchased materials, parts and products are compliant to company requirements in terms of Fit, Form and Function. This extends from the concept of designs through to product obsolescence. This will be achieved through the proactive and skilful application of various tools and techniques which ensure that the supplier’s process capability is understood, soundly established and controlled at source, minimising risks of non-compliance and application of reactive (non value add) inspection processes.

Working closely with Procurement colleagues in the selection and ongoing development and auditing of the supply base and manufacturing processes to ensure maximum value is obtained with minimal disruption. Typically you will have responsibility for supplies from 30 to 50 suppliers, across 20 to 30 different industrial categories, and covering upwards of 2000 separate purchased items.

Key Responsibilities

• In conjunction with Purchasing Specialists and Purchasing management, assesses existing supplier manufacturing capabilities for defined project needs, identifying gaps, risks and establishing root causes of those gaps in requirement, driving through resolution when required.

• Takes responsibility for assessing the manufacturing and supply quality capabilities of new sources and makes recommendations on supplier selection in conjunction with product technical and commercial support, including primary product and spares.

• Provides quality expertise utilising quality tools typically inline with the 6 sigma process for ensuring best practice application of DFM through NPD and during general engineering improvement activities. Works with design and tooling engineers internal/external to provide optimum tooling solutions to enable effective manufacturing processes and quality results.

• Integral member of Design FMEA activities with regard to process capability establishment. Conducts Process FMEA’s as required to ensure identified critical design features are production capable and quality controlled.

• Critiques new product engineering drawings in close conjunction with design engineer/product support, ensuring specification is clearly defined & tolerances are inline with the capability of processes selected.

• From own experience, recommends improvements and good practice engineering solutions for new product designs.

• Establishes quality control plans which identify critical features and defines methods of control including metrology applications, test, aesthetics control and special gauging. Specifies the need for capability studies for sample submissions and SPC requirements at this stage working in close cooperation with the supplier.

• Has responsibility for the corrective action process ensuring CAR’s are created when required, investigated thoroughly and long term problem resolutions put into place as rapidly as is effectively possible.

• Is a key member in new product and manufacturing approval assessments onsite at suppliers. Takes responsibility for all quality decisions whilst onsite, including Far East based projects

• Drives sample appraisal activities/system (PPAP) of new products from submission to production approval. As part of SAR sign off ensures engineering drawings reflect reported dimensional capabilities. Recommends drawing tolerances based on statistical analysis of capability studies.

• Determines with knowledge of design requirements and process considerations incoming inspection check criteria and trains in their application.

• Responsible for project DP sign off for completion of all supplier quality issues.

• Provides quality engineering expertise which includes process and design considerations for cost down, value engineering and process improvement activities.

• Plays a major role in helping and advising the purchasing categories in formulating and implementing improved ways of managing supplier quality and is responsible for managing and reporting upon quality metrics (ppm and Corrective Actions)

Skills/Requirements

  • Minimum 4 Years experience in a manufacturing quality environment.

  • Theoretical, intellectual and knowledge capacity consistent with a HND/Degree

  • A strong personality, self motivated and able to work both remotely and within project teams

  • Has a sound understanding of key business manufacturing processes

  • Capable of supporting and influencing DFM through NPD utilising quality tools inline with 6 sigma practices

  • Good problem solving capabilities

  • Able to communicate effectively up and down and within teams and to all levels internally and at suppliers

  • Tenacious in ensuring actions are closed off, particularly with 3rd parties

  • Strong understanding of metrology disciplines and able to understand engineering drawings and specifications

  • A basic level of commercial acumen to assist more knowledgably in value based decision making processes.
