Join HII Marine Services Operations (MSO) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. MSO trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Outside Machinist/Mechanic: Third Class candidate will support MSO, working closely with our skilled trades teams, on various surface ships, utilizing various tools of the trade, removing, installing and upgrading industrial systems and equipment. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad, for durations up to 75% of the time when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided, based on location, when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

Weekend and/or overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.

  • Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.

  • Assist to meet standards on various contracts such as Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command and Naval Surface Warfare Center.

  • Receive certification to safely take paint and insulation samples and prepare and submit for quantitative laboratory testing.

  • Apply insulation, lagging materials, paint and top coatings to various structures and piping aboard naval vessels.

  • Install, operate, maintain, repair and modify equipment and structure.

  • Assist in a variety of installation, maintenance and technical support on products such as shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment at company, customer and/or field locations.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.

  • Maintain effective customer communications and relations. May provide onsite training of customer support personnel.

  • Apply understanding of production and processes to assignments.

  • Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks related to shipboard maintenance.

  • May assist in the development and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.

  • Perform duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent, and 2 years of related naval shipboard insulating experience.

  • Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.

  • Candidate must be willing, with appropriate training and PPE, to work around and with Suspected Asbestos Containing materials and materials potentially containing high level of heavy metals.

  • Must be able to attend and pass classes for certification to safely take paint and insulation samples and prepare and submit for quantitative laboratory testing.

  • Must have experience with the safe and proper application of insulation, insulating media and materials aboard surface ships including foam backed board, fiberglass backed hull board and pipe insulation and lagging.

  • Must have experience working outside of trade specific requirements as team projects require, assisting team members, on various structural and mechanical systems and associated equipment using various hand tools, power tools and measurement devices, towards task completion.

  • Must have the ability to read, interpret and follow blueprints, technical drawings and/or technical manuals.

  • Must have knowledge of safety and quality control steps and procedures.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance, and maintain clearance level throughout employment.

  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date, and maintain credentials throughout employment.

  • Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.

  • Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.

Preferred Requirements

  • Candidates with experience completing OQE, especially Chain of Custody documentation, are highly preferred.

  • Candidates capable of providing basic insulating training to less experienced individuals are highly preferred.

  • Candidates who have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or a skilled trades certificate program are preferred.

  • Current or active DoD clearance a plus.

  • OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
