PARAMEDIC IN CHARGE

Starting Salary: $85,488

These positions are covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with the Chicago Fire Fighters Union, Local No. 02, Bargaining Unit 87 (BU 87). Only CAREER SERVICE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT, with the title of FIRE PARAMEDIC in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid on this position.

THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CAREER SERVICE UNIFORMED MEMBERS OF THE CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Under general supervision of an Ambulance Commander/Paramedic Field Chief, a Paramedic In-Charge supervises an ambulance crew, provides emergency medical care and transportation of victims of injury or illness, provides in-field training to probationary Fire Paramedics, maintains emergency medical equipment, ensures completion of all necessary documentation, and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Supervises the safe operation of an ambulance and the enforcement of established Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) regulations, Region 11 Standing Medical Orders, Policies & Procedures, and Fire Department directives

  • Initiates telemetry communications with appropriate telemetry base while responding to calls for emergency medical assistance to provide pre-hospital emergency medical care

  • Assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury and following established protocols, treats sick and injured persons at fire and emergency scenes

  • Uses medical equipment and applies established protocols to administer medications, monitor cardiac patients and perform other required medical procedures

  • Prepares patients for transport to hospital facilities, placing them on a stretcher or other conveyance devices, lifting and carrying patients as required

  • Transports patients to appropriate emergency departments, adult or pediatric trauma centers or other specialty care centers as identified by Region 11

  • Responsible for the preparation of patient care reports, journal entries and other documents as required

  • Inspects operational condition of the ambulance, ensures adequate inventory of supplies on the ambulance are stocked and electronic and communication equipment is operating appropriate

  • Supervises, evaluates and documents the performance and/or deficiencies of FPM Candidates during their probationary period

  • Oversees and performs general maintenance and cleaning of Fire Department equipment and general housekeeping of firehouse facilities

  • Supervises and strictly employs universal precautions, proper barrier devices and routine hand washing in the prevention of disease transmission

  • Participates in new EMS Initiates as required

  • Performs related duties as required

NOTE: Only current uniformed career service employees of the Chicago Fire Department who meet the selected criteria will be considered.

HOURS: Extended, variable

DAYS OFF: Variable

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Career Service status as a Fire Paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department for 18 months

Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications

  • Must have and maintain State of Illinois certification as a licensed Paramedic/EMTP

  • Must have a valid State of Illinois Driver's License

NOTE: Employees who have completed their probationary period may successfully apply but will not be eligible for consideration until they have completed 18 months of service . No employee may be promoted until completion of at least eighteen (18) months in the classification immediately below the vacancy. (C.B.A – 9.3 C.2 ​.)

This position does not require a test or interview. Applicants who successfully apply for the position AND meet the requirement of 18 months as a Fire Paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department will be promoted in SENIORITY order .
