Number of Positions: 3

These positions are open to the general public and to all current city employees covered under the terms of the City's collective bargaining agreement with the AMERICAN FEDERATION OF STATE, COUNTY AND MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES (AFSCME) – (BARGAINING UNIT #01, 03, 04, 05). Only employees currently in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision coordinates the review of architectural plans for small, medium, or large non-complex construction and renovations projects submitted for permit issuance in accordance with the Chicago Municipal Code and performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Conducts electronic architectural plan reviews of new construction and/or building renovation projects of a technical and complex nature and submits for building permit issuance.

  • Reviews and evaluates building permit applications to ensure constructors and subcontractors are licensed and insured and that applications are complete and processed in accordance with departmental administrative procedures.

  • Ensures architectural drawings submitted for plan review comply with the Chicago Construction and Zoning Code provisions.

  • Verifies that building code issues related to building materials and structures, insulation, fire protection, new construction height limitations, exiting requirements and other related building and safety Chicago Construction Code requirements are reviewed for compliance prior to approval for the issuance of building permits.

  • Explains the permit issuance and regulatory review process to developers, architects, structural engineers, and design professionals and/or property owners.

  • Interprets municipal Construction Code requirements and regulations and advises applicants on plan review procedures.

  • Provides information concerning complex problems or issues with plan reviews and building permit approval to department managers and works jointly with them for resolution.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (1 hour lunch)

Salary: $93,708/Annually

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Civil, Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering, plus at least three (3) years of professional work experience in managing building, architectural and/or engineering projects involving the review and approval of construction designs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience provided the minimum degree requirement is met.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected. The interviewed bidders possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.

Preference will be given to external candidates possessing the following :

  • Previous project management experience in Building architecture or involving engineering projects

  • Previous work experience reviewing electronic architectural plans

  • Knowledge of building construction types, occupancy classifications and requirements

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
