MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:

$3,612.91 - $3,798.72 - $3,992.40 - $4,197.82 - $4,412.43 - $4,638.81

The current vacancy exists in the City of Stockton's Community Services Department - Library Service Division. The Bookmobile Driver/Circulation Assistant will operate a bookmobile on a scheduled route and assist patrons with the circulation of library books and materials.

The incumbent will work Monday through Friday 9:00am - 6:00pm.

Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by the Stockton City Employees' Association bargaining unit. (Classified/Represented)

This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both.

These lists may be used to fill future vcancies.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.

Under general supervision, operates a bookmobile on a scheduled route; assists patrons with the circulation of library books and materials; performs related work as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a large perimeter-load vehicle or bookmobile. The incumbent adheres to a preestablished time schedule and route and assists patrons with circulation of the bookmobile’s books and materials.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Operates an assigned large perimeter-load vehicle along an established route.

  • Performs daily routine maintenance checks, including oil, tires, vehicle equipment and engine start-ups.

  • Cleans vehicle and schedules necessary vehicle maintenance and/or coordinates maintenance with other City staff from other City departments or with outside firms.

  • Loads and unloads books and materials from the bookmobile; sorts, shelves, moves and maintains books and materials in order; mends damaged books.

  • Registers patrons for library cards; verifies all pertinent information with library system wide records; enters and updates patron records on computerized system.

  • Checks books and materials in and out using a computerized system; reviews due dates and condition and processes patron requests for items not on the bookmobile.

  • Collects fines for overdue, lost or damaged items; updates patron records accordingly.

  • Operates a computer terminal and other standard and library office equipment.

  • Maintains records and files related to bookmobile services and activities and prepares basic statistical reports.

  • Reconciles cash collected on payment of fines or for damages; balances receipts with cash.

  • Responds to patron questions and requests; advises patrons of circulation policies and procedures; recommends books and materials for bookmobile collection.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED and one year of experience which has involved public contact, preferably in a library setting.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license.

  • Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including the ability to reach above head and bend to floor level, and to lift and carry 30 pounds.

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices for safe operation of automotive equipment;

  • State and local automobile operation and parking laws and regulations;

  • General municipal library services and functions and public desk etiquette;

  • Basic business arithmetic; and

  • Basic office practices and the use of standard office equipment, including computerized equipment.

Skill in:

  • Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner;

  • Observing safe driving rules and regulations;

  • Dealing tactfully and effectively with a variety of individuals, including patrons, library staff and the general public;

  • Making accurate arithmetic calculations to determine library overdue fees, cash balances and related tasks;

  • Making sound judgments within established guidelines;

  • Interpreting library procedures and operational manuals;

  • Assisting patrons with library books and materials processing and circulation;

  • Operating standard business office equipment, including a computer workstation; and

  • Establishing and maintaining effective and courteous communications with a wide variety of people contacted in the course of work.

The Examination:

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best meet the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
