CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a deep class in which incumbents may be assigned to any of the three levels in the series, provided that they possess the required education, certification, and experience and successfully demonstrate proficiency which meets the qualifications for the class to which they are to be assigned. The Plan Checker I and II are distinguished from the Senior Plan Checker in that the latter has responsibility for a higher degree of accounting knowledge, expertise, and ability to independently handle progressively difficult and complex assignments with less supervision.

Plan Checker I is the entry level in the Plan Checker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform the more routine building plan checks while learning City policies and procedures and specific methods and techniques of plan checking. As experience is gained, assignments become more diversified and are performed under less supervision.

Plan Checker II is the journey level in the series, fully competent to perform the full range of assigned duties. Incumbents are expected to exercise independent judgment and make sound recommendations based on building plans examination results.

Senior Plan Checker is the advanced level in the series and performs plan checking on more complex projects including major commercial and industrial developments and may provide lead supervision over subordinate plan check personnel. Assignments are varied and allow for the exercise of considerable judgment and independence in the performance of plan check work. This class is distinguished from Supervising Plan Checker/Structural Engineer in that the latter is a professional engineer or licensed architect and has first-line supervisory responsibility for the plan checking function.
