Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. Project Manager Fire Protection in Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland-Cliffs, Cleveland Headquarters Office, has an immediate opening for a Project Manager–Fire Protection. This person should be effective, organized and team-oriented with superior written and verbal communications skills in order to assist and guide Engineering Group Project Engineers and others assigned by Engineering Department Management, with the engineering, design, construction, testing and commissioning of fire protection systems associated with major capital projects, from establishment of the initial scope requirements during the project and budget development and engineering phases through project implementation, and commissioning, while following the Cleveland-Cliffs’ safety and quality standards as well as assuring compliance with NFPA Code requirements.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Fulfill the Health and Safety and Environmental responsibilities as defined in Cleveland-Cliffs corporate policies.

  • Work with corporate and plant engineering personnel to identify, define, design, install and commission fire protection systems associated with major capital projects.

  • Assist with the development and preparation of fire protection related submittals included in capital appropriations requests, including the establishment of project requirements and scope, identification of relevant NFPA code requirements, development of detailed scopes of work, assisting with the creation of detailed cost estimates, supervision and guidance of contractors during project implementation, and hands on involvement in final system testing and commissioning.

  • Assist with the execution of the associated capital projects, from inception through implementation, start-up and commissioning.

  • Determine the necessary resources needed (outside engineering support, field services, material expediting, etc.) to accomplish the intent of the project and schedule as needed

  • Assist operations with small, non-capital fire protection projects, inspections, contractor evaluations and diagnostics with the goal of improving the efficiency, reliability and safety of fire protection systems at any of the Cleveland-Cliffs steelmaking or processing facilities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in technical field

  • 5 years of fire protection project-related experience within manufacturing, preferably steel mill-related

  • Possess a continuous improvement mindset

  • Must possess the ability to work with all levels of engineering and management as well as operations and maintenance both within the Cleveland-Cliffs organization and outside vendors, consultants, suppliers and resources as needed

  • Must engage in a genuine team approach to developing, implementing, problem solving, executing, and implementing projects

  • Must exhibit a strong technical competence regarding fire protection, NFPA requirements and compliance, insurance requirements, and asset protection

  • Must be willing to participate as a member of cross-functional teams in the implementation of major fire protection systems relating to Capital projects as a member of the Engineering Department and will be expected to assist with facility fire protections systems including working with Operations and Maintenance at a host facility

  • Must possess a willingness to travel to any Cleveland-Cliffs facilities wherein capital projects require fire protection engineering assistance or non-capital facility fire protection assistance is requested or required

  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral

  • Working knowledge of all component programs of the MS Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in fire protection or related engineering field,

  • 10 years of experience in a steelmaking facility or similar heavy manufacturing environment.
