Case Western Reserve University Research Assistant 1 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work and support scientists by doing electrophysiological experiments using the marine mollusk (sea slug) Aplysia californica. The research assistant will assist with maintenance of the aquaria housing the slugs. The research assistant will also collect, verify, record and compile data and information related to the ongoing research carried out in the lab. This position will work with sea slugs, which are invertebrate animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform animal dissection and surgery to set up semi-intact preparations, and use of electrophysiological equipment to stimulate and monitor neural activity. Apply controlled stimuli to the preparation (e.g., sensory stimuli) as well as measure force and other relevant physiological outputs. (25%)
  2. Conduct analysis of samples. Synchronize video and neurophysiological data, identify spikes, determine their number and frequency, and perform any other analyses of the samples necessary to characterize responses. Apply appropriate statistical measure. Maintain this data in machine readable form and regularly back it up. (25%)
  3. Record results for experiments. For each experiment, maintain a detailed record of the specific details of the slug (e.g., its mass and behavior), the treatments applied, and observations about the results. Maintain this meta-data in a machine readable form and regularly back it up. (20%)
  4. Maintain equipment to do the electrophysiological recordings, force measurements, and other measurements. (20%)
  5. Order relevant laboratory supplies. (7%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
