The College of Architecture at Texas A&M University is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. The 126 faculty members in the Departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Urban Planning (LAUP), and Construction Science serve 2,352 students ( 1,876 undergraduate and 476 graduate students) in 14- degree programs. These cover the entire spectrum of disciplines having to do with the built environment. Although over 300,000 in population, the Bryan/College Station area maintains its small-town feel, offering a high quality of life with a low cost of living. The Bryan/College Station area is in the center of the Texas Triangle—home to more than 21 million people in four metropolitan areas (all within easy driving distance) including Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio. The challenges currently facing Texas related to climate change, natural hazards, transportation, demographic composition, and economic change foreshadow the changes that the rest of the nation will experience over the next 30 years, making it a perfect laboratory for testing hypotheses and solutions related to urban and land development and management.
