About this role

The Dow Coating Materials (DCM) Product & Process R&D group is offering an exciting opportunity for aSynthesis Scientist, based in Collegeville, PA.

Dow Coating Materials provides innovative technologies to advance the performance of paints and coatings, and offers a broad product portfolio of polymeric binders, dispersants, rheology modifiers, surfactants, defoamers, and wetting agents for a wide variety of end markets, including architectural and industrial coating applications. With over 60 years of paint and coatings innovation, DCM has grown from the inventor of waterborne acrylic technology into the premier worldwide supplier of high-performance sustainable coating solutions. Dow Coating Materials has world class R&D capabilities and technical centers across the globe with a full suite of acrylic and hybrid chemistry materials enabled by a customer-centric organization to deliver commercial solutions to the market.

The DCM Product & Process R&D Organization is responsible for the material design, synthesis, scale-up, process development, and plant support for products across the Acrylic Emulsion Network.

In this role, you will provide expertise and technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams in the development of innovative products and technical solutions for DCM’s customers. It is expected that this role would lead and contribute to projects and platforms from concept shaping and technology development to commercialization, in existing and future markets, in close partnership with broader Dow business R&D, Core R&D teams, and commercial teams. It is also expected that this role will closely interact with DCM Process R&D, Tech Center, and the broader M&E organization to accelerate innovation delivery.

Preferred candidates will be expected to have strong hands-on attitude, curiosity, and can-do spirit to execute the R&D strategy, including responsibilities for technical delivery, new technology identification and development, IP strategy, project management and multigenerational product plans that align with DCM’s growth, innovation, Safer Materials, and Sustainability goals.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Works safely in an R&D environment, actively participates in company safety programs and implements improved EH&S practices.

  • Demonstrates safety leadership by modeling positive behaviors and by proactively addressing challenges in the workplace as they arise.

  • Defines, conducts, and leads research efforts using expertise and application of scientific principles, theory and experimental design.

  • Consistently applies the Scientific Method, with emphasis on using statistical tools and design-of-experiments (DOE).

  • Communicates effectively to a range of cross-functional partners and stakeholders.

  • Demonstrates a resourceful mindset. An ideal candidate will work with available resources and leverage broader expertise (Core R&D and other business resources) to execute projects.

  • Develops an in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature in relevant and related areas of research. Shares and employs this information to advance the relevant state of the art.

  • Coaches and mentors junior level researchers and technologists in the areas of technical and career development.

  • Documents methodology, knowledge and technology developed in internal reports and presentations. When appropriate, communicates results internally and externally in alignment with business and technical strategies. Drafts and submits patent disclosures and patent applications as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of business ambitions, goals, and strategies

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or science related field required; Masters degree or PhD preferred.

  • 2+ years of relevant industry experience is required

  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in areas such as emulsion polymerization and interfacial science, acrylic chemistries and process, and polymer synthesis.

Domestic relocation assistance is not available for this position.
