Job Summary:

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic Lead analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, and maintain Army equipment such as HMMWVs, FMTVs, LHSs, PLS, and all the variants to these pieces. The Lead operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles, and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust variety of equipment. The lead is also required to scrub, securitize the ESR and/or the workbook to ensure its accuracy.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervises subordinate motor vehicle mechanics. Performs the full range of field-level overhaul and repair work on chassis group units of one or more types of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, gasoline or multi-fuel. Types include those in commercial, industrial, or tactical use such as passenger cars, trucks, forklift trucks and warehouse tractors, jeeps, multi-wheel drive vehicles with automatic transmissions and auxiliary.

  • Perform DS/GS and some depot repair.

  • Manage and distribute workload; maintains accurate daily status on all jobs.Determine causes of malfunctions and repair method.

  • Determines exact nature and extent of repairs required and performs major and minor overhaul and repair on engines, power transmissions, suspension, steering and braking operational systems and related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, wheel and engine assemblies.

  • Make operational checks and adjustments as required.

  • Use specialized testing equipment such as compression testers, motor analyzers and test benches.

  • Directs works to junior and helper mechanics as required.

  • Counsels employees on a regular basis and provides input to appraisals.

  • Reviews work in progress and upon completion for conformance to standards.

  • Assist mechanics on proper troubleshooting and maintenance procedures and determine repair vs. replacing.

  • Have access to the internet, ILAP, G-Army, SARRS, FEDMAL, and LOGSA; know how the supply system works and how to check on parts status.

  • Performs duty as technical inspector.

  • Provides input on employee evaluations.

  • Counsels and train’s employees.

  • Proficient in proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste.

  • As a leader the Lead inspires others to perform well; accepts positive feedback from others.

  • Good interpersonal skills allowing total focus on solving problems with employees, not blaming, maintain confidentiality, keeps emotions under control and remains open to new ideas.

  • Lead, plan, train and review the work of subordinates whose responsibility is to repair and maintain military and commercial equipment.

  • Lead, plan, direct and participate in all facets of automotive repair procedures as applicable / required for mission success.

  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for assigned jobs and distribute the work load to fulfill mission requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ensure accuracy of invoicing that is precision of Deltek/G-Army matchup.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification:

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

  • Experience: Five years' experience in vehicle maintenance at the journeyman level. Knowledgeable on all types of system, electrical, hydraulic, brakes (both air and hydraulics) CTIS, fuel injection. In general, the Motor Vehicle Lead requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through apprenticeship or equivalent training experience.

  • Leadership: Three years' experience as a group leader in guidance, review of timecards, teaching policy and proceedures.

  • Must possess and continuously maintain a current State of Colorado Driver’s License.

Material & Equipment Directly Used:

Commercial and tactical automotive automated and hand tools; TMDE; materiel handling equipment

Working Environment/physical Activities:

  • Work is generally conducted in a shop environment. However, duties may involve the conduct of work in the out-of-doors area with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions.

  • Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs. stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting.
