How you make a difference
As a Custody Officer (CO), the primary responsibility is to ensure the security and safety of all residents under their supervision. This involves conducting thorough security checks and inspections of the working environment, promptly addressing and reporting any shortcomings or deficiencies to the appropriate authorities. Additionally, the CO is tasked with preparing detailed written reports on daily activities, disciplinary infractions, accidents, and incidents while fostering and maintaining a professional rapport with residents, supervisors, and fellow employees.
Key Responsibilities
Maintains security by actively monitoring and preventing escapes, intervening in disruptive behaviors, and implementing safety precautions to address potential security breaches.
Controls and monitors communication and surveillance systems, including emergency signals and various facility systems, while responding to emergency calls to de-escalate aggression, control fights and riots, and prevent escapes using established aggression control techniques.
Manages the entry and exit of individuals and vehicles, verifying identification, conducting searches, and continuously inspecting the facility environment for escape risks and hazardous conditions.
Prepares and submits accurate facility reports within specified time frames, operates security devices, ensures safety and sanitation standards, and responds to resident problems and needs, maintaining a professional rapport with residents.
Conducts formal and informal resident counts, performs safety and sanitation inspections, and addresses shortcomings or deficiencies, ensuring compliance with facility policies and procedures.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education
- Must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent as defined by the state certification/licensing authority.
Experience
- One (1) year experience in correctional or security field preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Satisfactory completion of academic and on-the-job training as required for certification as a Custody Officer.
Must maintain current, valid certification through licensing agency throughout employment.
Compliance
Will comply with facility specific requirements as applicable.
Must meet minimum age requirements as defined by the state certification/licensing authority.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving crime of moral turpitude.
Must not have received a dishonorable or undesirable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
Have his/her processed fingerprints on file with the licensing agency.
