Scope of Position

The position of Senior Precision Mechanical Engineer is within the Applied Research & Development (AR&D) Department of the Corning Optical Communications Division. AR&D combines a deep understanding of Fiber Optic telecommunication systems with fundamental knowledge of structured materials to develop new advantaged optical products and processes. This role will focus on early-stage product and process development leading to demonstration of new technologies driving business growth

Key Responsibilities

  • Mechanical design of precision components with hands-on assembly, alignment, and testing

  • 3D Computer Aided Design with application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

  • Identify / integrate / verify sub-micrometer motion control and associated metrology

  • Modeling / simulation of components and assemblies using Finite Element Analysis

  • Review of materials supporting product improvements, cost reductions, and reliability

  • Apply Design for Manufacturability principles to ensure high yields and the lowest cost

  • Participate in team problem solving using structured methods / statistical tools

  • Collaborate with both internal and external resources to leverage expertise

  • Coordinate third party suppliers to drive completion of project goals

  • Documentation of experimental plans and associated test procedures

  • Analyze test data and document results in technical internal reports

  • Improve existing laboratory process capabilities and metrology equipment

  • Benchmark existing technologies to identify potential business opportunities

  • Domestic travel up to 10% based on project assignments

Required Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, advanced degree preferred

  • 10+ years of relevant work experience

  • High level of competence with dimensional engineering and associated metrology

  • 3D CAD proficiency with solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

  • Knowledge of sub-micrometer precision motion control, robotics, and semi-automation

  • Analytical modeling / simulation skills using linear and non-linear Finite Element Analysis

  • Deep expertise in materials such as metals, plastics, rubbers, glass, and ceramics

  • Metrology background with experience determining accuracy and precision

  • Advanced computational skills including data acquisition and analysis

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of optical connector designs and related Cable assemblies

  • Understanding of optical fiber and associated manufacturing processes

  • Experience with component design for high volume injection molding

  • Capable of CNC Machining, Additive Manufacturing, and 3D Printing

  • Solid familiarity with Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

The range for this position is $89,822.00 - $123,505.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
