About the role, Your Impact

Baxter & Woodman has a rewarding opportunity for a highly motivated Drainage Engineer looking for career advancement, in our Chicago, Illinois office. This position supervises and oversees employees and projects assigned to the Transportation Drainage Department, within the Transportation Group. This team orientated position will include working with Baxter & Woodmans diverse disciplines and offices.

What your day-to-day will look like

  • Supervise and oversee employees and projects assigned to Transportation Drainage Department.
  • Recognize staffing needs and assist with hiring.
  • Create new products and innovative client offerings.
  • Assist the marketing department with proposal preparation; prepare approach, scope and fee for drainage and permitting tasks; and participate in proposal interviews.
  • Build teams, and assign staff to projects based on knowledge, skills and availability.
  • Link management and staff through active communication.
  • Monitor department performance and evaluate staff regularly (client satisfaction, project schedule, project budget, billings, QA/QC).
  • Plan department efforts, workload and budget.
  • Develop standards and quality control.
  • Provide knowledge transfer and training opportunities for staff.
  • Manage drainage components of engineering reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates using IDOT Standards; including stormwater facilities (open channels, culverts, storm sewers, detention basins, green infrastructure, etc.), Hydraulic Reports, Location Drainage Studies, and Location Drainage Technical Memorandums.
  • Communicate with clients and regulatory agencies.

Education/License Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer

Must-haves, what you will bring

  • 8+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience preparing IDOT Hydraulic Reports and Phase 1 drainage studies, including Location Drainage Studies and Location Drainage Technical Memorandums.
  • Experience with roadway and infrastructure design using IDOT, Tollway, and County design criteria.
  • Ability to attend client meetings and marketing functions, occasionally at night.
  • Ability to travel throughout Baxter & Woodmans service area (own transportation).
  • Ability to independently handle a variety of ongoing tasks and responsibilities.
  • Strong written, verbal, computer, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated requiring minimal oversight.
  • Work within a Team-first culture that encourages individual development and accomplishment of goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience obtaining permits related to drainage design, floodplain/floodway, and wetland impacts, including U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 and IDNR-OWR Floodway Construction permits
  • Microstation/Geopak, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, StormCAD, and HY-8 capabilities with an understanding of IDOT work flow preferred.
  • Existing client network preferred, including experience working with IDOT and county staff

Compensation-The pay range for this role is \$110,000 to \$120,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, and certifications.
