Description of Work

This position will be located at the Bridge Maintenance Office in Fayetteville. Position will supervise lower-level Engineering Technicians, with duties including but not limited to reviewing daily inspection reports, scheduling project personnel and project field reviews. Perform independent inspections of bridge maintenance contract replacement and field maintenance projects to assure compliance with contract provisions and standard specifications for roads and structures. Create and assemble contract documents.

Also perform a range of routine and standardized work which may include the following: serving as a rodperson and/or instrument person; inspecting structure and roadway operations including pile driving, steel/concrete placement, sub grade preparation, asphalt paving and traffic activity; performing routine mathematical computations in calculating work accomplished by contractors and others. Tracking and reporting contract progress, as well as processing contractor and material invoices.

This position will be responsible for entering data in HiCams, such as samples, pay records, material received reports, tickets, etc. Work may include other bridge maintenance duties and responsibilities as assigned. Steel toe footwear recommended.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in highway construction and knowledge of mathematical functions .

  • Experience in working complex inspections for roadway, structure, and resurfacing project to ensure compliance with contract documents, plans, and NCDOT standards and specifications.

  • Experience maintaining detailed records, reports, performing analysis of findings, and recommending correction action.

  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computers and software.

  • Experience in the supervision, management, and training of subordinate employees.

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to legally drive a state vehicle.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and (3) three years of progressive technical level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
