Naval Facilities Engineering Command MATERIAL HANDLER in Dahlgren, Virginia

Responsibilities You will identify type of material handling equipment (e.g., forklift, shelving, restraints) necessary to move or store heavy, bulky, or odd-shaped items. You will move heavy materials in close quarters (e.g., narrow aisles or ramps, in and out of buildings, on and off trucks or other conveyance). You will operate power equipment and small hand tools to assist with warehousing duties. You will safely operate a forklift, hand truck, pallet jack, or other material handling equipment to gather items for shipment. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: 1) Operating material handling equipment (MHE)/forklifts capable of lifting loads weighing 4,500 kilograms (10,000 pounds) or more to move material; 2) Entering, modifying, and retrieving information from electronic records, supply systems and reports; 3) Composing forms relating to stock description and condition, quantity, and unit of issue; and 4) Following specialized handling and storage procedures as required by regulatory and safety requirements. Education Additional Information This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service. Must be able to successfully complete the following training courses within prescribed timeframe: Fork Lift training OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Basic First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course Drug Testing Designated Position (TDP): The incumbent in the position is subject to random drug tests. This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled. A 40 hour work week is typical for this position. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. PHYSICAL EFFORT Work is performed on hard surfaces daily for extended periods of time that require standing, stooping, bending, walking, pulling, pushing, kneeling and working in tiring and sometimes uncomfortable positions. Employee frequently lifts and moves items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted using proper lifting techniques. Heavier items are moved using fork lifts, material-handling equipment or with assistance from other employees. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed using material handling equipment primarily inside and outside a warehouse, in hot, cold, drafty or poorly lighted areas. Employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents and high noise areas while working in a mechanized work area, or chemical fumes while working in a hazardous materials area. Employee will be required to wear safety shoes and eyewear. Additional personal protective equipment (PPE) include, but not are not limited to, hard hats, gloves, masks, and hearing protection.
