Position Description

The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics ( NSM ) at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) invites applications for an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives ( AASI ). Applicants must qualify for tenure at the rank of associate or full professor in NSM . In addition, this position will include duties as Associate Dean for Effectiveness and Accountability in the Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science ( ECS ) to facilitate strategic collaborative efforts between the schools.

NSM Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Strategic Initiatives is primarily responsible for advancing NSM’s mission to inspire curiosity and foster innovation by working with the Dean to lead the school through planned enrollment growth and the strategic expansion of research and academic programs, particularly those that foster collaborations with ECS . The successful candidate will provide vision, leadership, and administration for faculty and staff recruiting, hiring, and development; strategic planning, monitoring, and goal setting in concert with the university’s strategic plan; and will work collaboratively with the Associate Deans for Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies on strategic initiatives that advance student recruitment and success.

ECS Associate Dean for Effectiveness and Accountability

The Associate Dean for Effectiveness and Accountability will provide strategic administrative leadership, effective management, and expertise in institutional effectiveness, accreditation, analysis, data infrastructure, data governance, compliance, and reporting. They will promote an organizational culture that values and utilizes data-driven decisions focusing on continuous improvement and accountability and will foster collaborations with NSM .

Essential duties include:

Responsibilities in NSM

  • Leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of short- and long-term strategic goals for NSM , including monitoring strategic metrics.

  • Providing leadership in developing, streamlining, and managing NSM policies and procedures, including those related to faculty workload and staff development.

  • Assisting the Dean with promotion, tenure, and post-tenure reviews of NSM faculty.

  • Assisting with the administration and operations of NSM , including serving in the Dean’s role when requested by the Dean or when the Dean is unavailable.

  • Working collaboratively with the Dean of NSM on budget and other fiscal matters.

  • Assisting NSM departments with faculty and staff recruiting, offer development, hiring, retirement, and emeritus faculty nominations.

  • Providing oversight for NSM new faculty and staff orientations.

Responsibilities in ECS

  • Overseeing the planning and execution of critical school effectiveness functions in ECS , including accreditation, compliance, strategic planning, and support of the school’s initiatives.

  • Supporting school effectiveness, accountability, and analysis activities, including data collection, data quality assurance, systems integration, business intelligence, and external reporting.

  • Collaborating with ECS leadership to support curricular matters that ensure quality, and leading ABET and SACSCOC accreditation matters, including the creation of self-studies and other reports and serving as the SACSCOC liaison responsible for efficient, effective, and timely communication among the university, school, and stakeholders within the school.

  • Working with ECS departments to provide support for the development, discussion, and analysis of improvement metrics.

  • Conducting needs assessments and facilitating professional development for faculty, staff, and administrators involved in ECS assessment and accreditation efforts.

Responsibilities in both NSM and ECS

  • Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives in ECS on synergistic elements of both schools’ strategic plans and the implementation, assessment, and monitoring of cross-cutting initiatives.

  • Assessing and evaluating new opportunities for alignment with school and institutional priorities, particularly those that bridge NSM and ECS .

  • Representing NSM and ECS on university and external committees and boards or delegating this responsibility to others, as appropriate.

  • Working with Associate Deans of Undergraduate Studies and Graduate Studies in ECS and NSM to create pathways for concurrent or sequential enrollment for first time in college and transfer students – both majors and non-majors – and initiate programs with stackable credentials in NSM and ECS to support workforce development. This role is crucial in shaping the future of our community.

  • Collaborating with NSM and ECS faculty on the planning, implementation, assessment, evaluation, and continuous improvement of curricula and programs of study, ensuring compliance with university accreditation requirements.

The appointment commences for the fall 2024 semester.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a discipline appropriate for a tenured faculty appointment in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and a minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education administration. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred Education and Experience. The successful candidate should also possess the following qualifications:

· Evidence of excellence in classroom teaching, research, and scholarly work appropriate to qualify the candidate for appointment as a tenured associate or full professor in an NSM department.

· Progressive leadership and administrative responsibility and a record of significant departmental, college/school, university, and professional society service.

· Experience with strategic planning, assessment, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

· Expertise with accreditation, which includes deep knowledge of program assessment, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

· Experience with recruiting and hiring faculty and staff, conducting evaluations, and supporting professional development.

· Experience working effectively as part of an executive leadership team characterized by trust, open communication, and shared goals. This includes effectiveness in managing and building strong working relationships at all levels of an organization.

· Experience supporting the success of faculty, staff, and students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

· Ability to manage sensitive and confidential issues.

· Agile, entrepreneurial, and forward-looking perspective to capture new opportunities and adjust to changing environments.

· Demonstrated commitment to consultative processes and shared governance.
