Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
Coder Functions:
Reviews and codes patient encounters of all specialty types for Professional Fee Coding for outpatient clinic visits
Reviews Simple Visit Coding (SVC) errors and/or edits, and assist coding charts related to a specialty or specific area
Reviews & abstracts Admission Discharge and Transfer (ADT) data to ensure information flows over to the billing office reflects the patient’s encounter
Ensure that all primary and secondary codes are accurately sequenced to focus on the patient’s reason for the visit
Reports missing or incomplete documentation to the analysis area or submit queries to providers if necessary
Meets daily coding productivity and quality standards set forth by the department
Reviews charge code entries by providers for accuracy and makes corrections as needed
Serves as a resource regarding insurance denials and assists coding questions from the Revenue Cycle Back Office
Assist Patient Access by providing codes for insurance precertification and preauthorization needs
Adheres to and follows coding guidelines and legal requirements to ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations
General Functions:
Completes required continuing education to maintain coding credentials and license
Support and assists the Coding Manager of HIM Director on special projects as requested
Working directly with other departments and attending internal/external meetings and trainings
Answers department phones, performs a variety of administrative and general office duties, if applicable
Performs other duties as assigned by management
Required Skills/Abilities
High school diploma or equivalent required
Must have successfully completed an approved coding program or be a graduate of a health information program or a minimum of 2 years of professional coding experience required
May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience as stated above
May be required to pass a pre-employment coding test at 80% or greater
May be certified through American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or through American Academy of Professional Coders as Certified Professional
Coder (CPC) or a Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
Work requires strong analytical, critical thinking and organizational skills with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail skills
Work requires excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written)
Work requires ability to report and problem solve using discretion, judgment, and professionalism
Work requires ability to handle multiple tasks, show initiative, and adjust to changes as appropriate under a stressful environment
Work requires ability to perform in a conservative, fast-paced, and quality driven environment
Work requires self-motivation, maturity, and being a team player
