At Caterpillar’s Decatur, IL facility , we develop large mining and heavy construction equipment while ensuring that we deliver a quality product to our customers. In this role as a Manufacturing Engineering Manager in the Fabrication Department, you will report to the senior Manufacturing Engineering Manager, and will be primarily responsible for determining the manufacturing process, tooling and tool design, and equipment needed to successfully and economically produce assigned parts in accordance with engineering specifications. What you will do:

  • Responsible for supporting the manufacturing operation by providing tooling, processes, welding procedures, robot programs, equipment, etc. needed and is done through coordination of a technical staff assigned to provide for the needs of the shop operation

  • Coordinates the introduction of new machines (NPI) and equipment (CapEx) and process changes (CI) to provide the most efficient and economical fabrication of quality parts in alignment with APQP

  • Ensures optimum utilization of equipment and space by coordinating the layout of areas such as storage areas, test equipment, etc. to accommodate the changing production requirements

  • Coordinates release dates and availability of machines and equipment and material to maintain schedules and satisfy demand

  • Establishes standards and works with shop personnel to resolve problems related to process, tooling, equipment, etc

  • Ensures implementation of modern technology and follows to determine effectiveness of equipment and systems

  • Monitors welders quality levels, develops and implements appropriate action plans

  • Coordinates capital projects for process enhancement and to improve customer satisfaction, conducting research and ensuring proper approvals

  • Keeps abreast of industry changes by attending product demonstrations and identifies ongoing improvements in processes and technologies to better serve customers

  • Provides training, development, and motivation for a staff capable of completing objectives and implementing cost reduction projects and meeting requirements of the fabrication process, and hires new staff members when necessary

  • Supervises or manages a work unit of primarily management and hourly employees where planning, scheduling, monitoring, and reviewing work of subordinates is required

  • Responsible for expense budgets, capital forecasts and expenditures, and all personnel issues in the area including performance evaluations of subordinates

  • Responsible for manpower, rough cut capacity planning

  • Confronts complex issues and problems that require careful analysis and diagnosis

Basic Qualifications:

  • An appropriate technical degree or equivalent manufacturing experience

  • Experience with planning systems, manufacturing operations, facilities, methods and tooling requirements

  • Experience with Caterpillar's Engineering Change Management, New Product Introduction and Quality Management System

Top Candidate will also have:

  • Previous supervisory experience

  • Advanced degree

  • Robotic programming experience

  • Project management experience

  • Skilled in CAPPLUS, HVC, VisView and other engineering tools

  • Previous experience with Caterpillar Large Mining Trucks, Off Highway Trucks, Wheel Tractor Scrapers, Wheel Loaders and Compactor products and processes

  • Proven leadership with strong analytical and communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required to develop others and persuade others inside and outside the department to take specific actions

  • Ability to influence cross functional business partners

  • Experience using a solid modeling CAD/CAM system for manufacturing purposes, such as Creo

  • Experience in developing GMAW and FCAW procedures to be used by production personnel

Capacity Planning & Management - MFG: Knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for determining production demand and ability to manage resources needed to provide satisfactory levels of service.

Level Working Knowledge:

• Documents major considerations of product promotions and analyzes their effect on production and required capacity.

• Provides management reports on actual and projected capacity requirements.

• Uses available tools to interpret forecasts and work out required capacity.

• Participates in developing short-term capacity requirements for a specific product or plant.

• Collects and collates key elements of demand chain used in developing capacity requirements.

Manufacturing Processes: Knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Advises others using industry experience and benchmarks for methodology effectiveness.

• Develops best practices documentation for all major activities and tasks.

• Trains others on all major tasks and considerations for the full manufacturing process.

• Participates in measuring and monitoring new processes and technologies.

• Selects and optimizes specific methodologies for specific products.

• Evaluates benefits, drawbacks and appropriateness of alternative processes and technologies.

Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment and site.

Level Extensive Experience:

• Consults on the use of new tools and techniques for safety protection.

• Performs safety inspections to assure compliance with OSHA requirements.

• Designs and implements emergency response processes and procedures.

• Promotes workplace safety among supervisors and workers; communicates safety rules and regulations.

• Assesses and reports unusual or new safety hazards or violations; initiates corrective action.

• Ensures that all employees and contractors comply with relevant safety policies and regulations.
