Job Description:

As a Manufacturing Engineer in the Fabrication Group at Caterpillar, you will determine the manufacturing processes, tooling and tool design, and equipment needed to successfully and economically produce assigned parts in accordance with engineering specifications.

Responsibilities/Job Duties

  • Responsible for supporting the manufacturing operation by providing tooling, processes, equipment, etc. to provide for the needs of the shop operation. Assignments include tool design, manufacturing processing, cost estimating, systems planning, layout, standards, releasing, etc. and requires the coordination of all disciplines * Troubleshoot day-to-day process issues, develops solutions and monitors improvements.

  • Analyze and deploy engineering changes

  • Establishes standards and works with shop personnel to resolve problems related to process, tooling, equipment, etc.

  • Coordinates capital projects for process enhancement and to improve customer satisfaction, conducting research and ensuring proper approvals 

  • Responsible for the RCCA of shop-related issues relating to manual and automated welding operations, manufacturing tooling and equipment, part fit-up, standard work, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Considerable hands-on arc welding experience with a strong focus on heavy plate welding using the GMAW process and a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of welding, including processes and metallurgy

  • Ability to successfully communicate and work with welders, welding operators, maintenance technicians, and engineers in training, troubleshooting, consulting, and research/development activities

  • Analyze and deploy engineering changes through the creation and maintenance of standard work instructions

  • Coordinates the introduction of new machines (NPI) and equipment and process changes to provide the most efficient and economical manufacture of quality parts in alignment with APQP

Top Candidates:

  • A strong understanding / working knowledge of Microsoft O/S and related applications

  • Skilled in CAPPLUS, HVC, AutoCAD, Teamcenter and related visualization software, Creo, and other engineering tools

  • Knowledge of Fabrication/Machining/Assembly

  • Ability to influence cross-functional business partners

  • Experience with Caterpillar Engineering Change Management, NPI, and Quality Management Systems

• Advises others using industry experience and benchmarks for methodology effectiveness.

• Develops best practices documentation for all major activities and tasks.

• Trains others on all major tasks and considerations for the full manufacturing process.

• Participates in measuring and monitoring new processes and technologies.

• Selects and optimizes specific methodologies for specific products.

• Evaluates benefits, drawbacks and appropriateness of alternative processes and technologies.

Manufacturing Safety:

• Consults on the use of new tools and techniques for safety protection.

• Performs safety inspections to assure compliance with OSHA requirements.

• Designs and implements emergency response processes and procedures.

• Promotes workplace safety among supervisors and workers; communicates safety rules and regulations.

• Assesses and reports unusual or new safety hazards or violations; initiates corrective action.

• Ensures that all employees and contractors comply with relevant safety policies and regulations.

Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies:

• Consults on development and implementation of cross-functional standards.

• Participates in the development of organizational policies and practices.

• Develops and uses control and monitoring mechanisms for adherence.

• Collaborates with other functions on establishing and documenting joint standards.

• Participates in defining architectural principles and standards for organization.

• Ensures communication vehicles are effectively informing affected areas and employees.

Problem Management Process - MFG:

• Uses a specific discipline or approach to problem solving and resolution.

• Works with features of problem reporting and tracking software.

The primary location for this position is Decatur IL

Summary Pay Range:

$87,480.00 - $131,280.00
