Elevating student success is CU Denver's first and highest priority. The School of Education & Human Development does this through targeted support to students which increases retention and graduation. Academic advising is recognized within the School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) as an integral part to elevating student success. This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) position will work with a team of academic advisors, faculty, and administrators to guide students through an educational path and to develop and implement programs and services that foster student persistence and graduation. Building relationships with current community college students interested in transferring into the program, new freshmen, as well as retaining students to graduation, is a key part of this position. Successful candidates will have multi-cultural competence, an understanding of an urban campus, facility in supporting diverse and first-generation students and will be able to develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students.

Academic Advisor
What you will do:
Academic Advising:
Partner with students to develop trusting, supportive relationships that foster students' sense of belonging to college, and leading in goal setting appropriate to their developmental stage
Serve as the primary point of contact for academic questions or concerns, working through in-person, individual appointments and group meetings, drop-in hours, video conferencing, telephone, and email
Lead students in intentional goal setting appropriate to their developmental stage
Collaborate closely with program faculty
Assist students with negotiating processes and procedures
Provide course and program plan information/advising to students including pre-requisite advising, transfer, course waiver/substitutions, credit for prior learning, recommendations for licensure/endorsement, graduation requirements, and degree audit
Maintain appropriate documentation of all student contacts (email, phone, online/virtual, scheduled and drop-in advising) via our advising note system
Complete initial and final graduation checks and communicate with students about all remaining requirements for successful graduation
Prepare for and facilitate in-person and virtual academic advising presentations and appointments students
Retention:
Proactively monitor students' and track degree progress, retention and benchmarks, and support students' development using advising tools and systems
Implement retention and early intervention initiatives for students in need of academic support
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement new opportunities for student retention and success
Execute communication plan for students and update it over time, customized to serve each student population (senior level position will also be involved with developing the plan)
Student Success:
Analyze students' concerns and provide timely referral/intervention services
Work with the SEHD Student Success Center, identify students in need of academic, financial or social support and connect them to campus resources needed to achieve their goals
Co-Teach (for intermediate level position) or teach (for senior level position) UNIV 1110 Student Success or similar course(s) as requested
This position involves working closely with students where the person may become aware of campus safety issues that may need to be reported as part of CU's commitment to compliance with the Clery Act. The person in this role will receive the related training and be required to submit data once per year to the campus Clery Act team. Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, psychology, educational technology, social science, liberal arts, communications, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
Intermediate Level:
- One year of full-time professional-level higher education experience in academic advising or student affairs office or position. Note: Paraprofessional experience, including graduate assistantship experience, does not count as full-time professional-level experience.
Senior Level:
- Two or more years of full-time professional-level higher education experience in academic advising or student affairs office or position. Note: Paraprofessional experience, including graduate assistantship experience, does not count as full-time professional-level experience.
Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
Master's degree (completed or in progress) in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Counseling, Education or Human Service-related field.
Three plus years of experience in direct undergraduate academic advising in higher education.
Experience with advising teacher licensure programs or other programs that lead to licensure or certifications through the state
Fluent in Spanish, which includes reading, writing, and speaking.
Demonstrated success and experience working with a CRM, CU SIS, Degree Audit System or other degree progress system, and other student information systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including ability to present to large groups.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
Demonstrate a commitment to providing outstanding customer service skills.
Demonstrate an understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion with a commitment to developing equitable practices.
Ability to work with individuals with diverse academic needs.
Strong record of collaboration with faculty and other staff.
High degree of reliability and flexibility; ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-cultural environment.
Strong commitment to student success.
Ability to take direction and use sound independent judgment.
Ability to work independently, identify and set priorities, prioritize multiple projects and requests, and meet deadlines and work autonomously in a fast-paced environment.

- This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $49,400 - $54,600 (Intermediate Professional) & $61,000 (Senior Professional)
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
