Hiring Pay Rate

Compensation is commensurate with experience and within the range of $75,000-$85,000. We provide a competitive benefits package, including health and dental insurance covered mostly by the employer, life insurance covered by the employer, your choice of a Defined Benefit or Defined Contribution PERA retirement plan, 10 paid sick days and 12 paid vacation days, 10 state/federal holidays, a generous flex schedule during the legislative interim, and a free parking space.

This position is employed by the Colorado Senate. Legislative Council facilitates the posting of the position, but is not the employing department.

The Deputy Communications Director assists the Colorado Senate Democratic Caucus with digital media strategy, content creation, and general communications support. This position aids in the execution of caucus communications goals during a high-energy, fast-paced legislative session and assists in highlighting caucus priorities and session accomplishments throughout the interim. The Deputy Communications Director is a full-time position and reports to the Communications Director.

-Available for intermittent evening and weekend work as the need arises.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Communications Director with designing and implementing the caucus communications strategy, including developing media pitches, policy roll outs, coordinating press conferences, etc.

  • Manage the development and execution of digital and social media strategy for the caucus – supervising the creation and distribution of creative content (including videos and graphics) that advance the message of the caucus and individual senators.

  • Compose a substantial amount of press releases, media advisories, op-eds, and speeches with clear, clean, concise, and accurate prose under deadline pressure.

  • Proactively identify state and national narratives/news cycles for the caucus to engage in.

-Oversee the design of social media packets, including graphics, sample posts, and videos, to promote and highlight priority legislation.

-Review articles, briefs, and data from our policy team for press and digital content opportunities, including drafting easy to understand talking points on complex and/or difficult to understand policy.

-Assist legislative aides in drafting press releases, press advisories, newsletters, and social media that highlight the work of their office/senator.

-Conduct periodic website updates to ensure content remains current and relevant. (SquareSpace platform)

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Qualifications:

-At least 2 years of communications experience, advocacy, or organizing experience

-Experience in developing social media strategy to promote specific goals/priorities

-Strong knowledge of messaging strategy for diverse audiences

-Strong written and verbal communication skills with impeccable attention to detail

-Experience in graphic design

-Proficient in web design and development

-Strong interest in state-level and/or Colorado politics

Preferred But Not Required:

-Sufficient fluency in spoken and written Spanish to fully engage Colorado’s Spanish-language press corps and population

-Experience in video editing/creation

-Previous experience in government, public policy, or political campaign work

-Journalism experience
