Description
Under immediate supervision, performs routine and progressively more difficult tasks involved in the general care of trees and shrubs.
Examples of Duties
Performs the less skilled and more routine tasks involved in pruning, trimming and/or evaluating trees and shrubs.
Removes broken branches or limbs.
Trims branches to give proper shape and growth.
Assists in cutting down trees.
Saws tree branches into smaller pieces of wood.
Lifts and carries tree branches to appropriate vehicles for proper disposal.
Performs routine tree and park grooming work.
Operates trucks or other automotive equipment used in forestry or landscape work, as required.
Performs duties in accordance with Departmental safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designated personal protective equipment.
Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
High School Diploma or G.E.D (General Education Development)
Persons certified or promoted to this classification shall be required to obtain and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a Group B endorsement with air brakes within six months of entry into this class. Such persons shall meet the State of Michigan Driving Eligibility Requirements for application for a CDL at the time of certification or hire to this class, including possessing a valid driver’s license.
Successful applicants must meet physical standards prescribed by the Michigan State Motor Carrier Division and must possess and carry a valid current Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier Safety Act-1988.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

One (1) year of experience in caring for and cultivating trees and shrubs.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
