Job Posting Summary

The Instructional Designer [ID] will work with faculty and other partners on the Connecting Mercy Pathways and Student Supports [COMPASS] project, which is funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Title V Program.

The goals of COMPASS are to increase enrollment, persistence, and retention among Hispanic and low-income students, to improve their on-time graduation rates, and to develop new curricular and co-curricular practices to meet their social, emotional, and academic needs. COMPASS is a five-year project that will allow our faculty and administration to establish a new First-Year Experience for all freshmen and rebuild our General Education curriculum to foster student engagement, expand student support, and help our students cultivate a sense of belonging at Mercy.

Working alongside the COMPASS Project Director and Activity Directors, the Instructional Designer will provide essential support to faculty as they revise existing General Education courses, create new Gen Ed courses, and refine their pedagogical approaches to achieve the project goals. The Instructional Designer will help develop, plan, and execute professional development opportunities for faculty cohorts working through the COMPASS project to make Mercy’s undergraduate curriculum and co-curriculum more accessible, engaging, and equity-minded.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Course Design: Working with a team of Faculty Fellows, the ID will support the Activity Director and project faculty on the design, implementation, and assessment of a revised model of General Education—including a new First-Year Seminar intended to help students develop a sense of academic purpose, establish connections with their peers and faculty, and make a successful transition to college. The ID will support project faculty working on courses across the Gen Ed curriculum to foster integrative learning, help students achieve a greater sense of belonging at Mercy, and reach their academic goals. The ID will also support faculty to revise courses at the major level in alignment with the principles and requirements of the remodeled General Education program.

  • Pedagogical Support and Faculty Professional Development: The Project COMPASS ID will work with project leadership and faculty to develop professional resources and experiences designed to help our full-time and part-time faculty refine their pedagogies to support the goals of the new General Education program—including a clarified and coordinated focus on collaborative learning and inclusive teaching.

  • Co-curricular Learning and Student Success: In support of the COMPASS project objectives, the ID will work with faculty, the project Data Analyst, and partners in the university’s student support offices, to ensure that General Education courses utilize available data and other tools to maximize student engagement and academic success. As part of these efforts, the ID will help faculty direct students to academic supports such as tutoring and co-curricular learning opportunities such as internships, research projects, and related activities.

  • Integrative Learning Support: The ID will help lead the design and implementation of Blackboard modules, eportfolios, and other learning resources to help students connect their learning across their General Education courses, from Gen Ed to their majors, and between their classroom learning and co-curricular experiences.

  • Experience working in a higher education environment, interacting and supporting faculty, administration, and staff.

  • Expertise in applying learning theory and pedagogy to develop instructional design strategies.

  • Experience in higher education related to first-year experience, student success, mentoring, and/or supporting low-income, first-generation college populations.
