About the Job:

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the entire maintenance and engineering of the property, plant, and equipment by coordinating the operation of the maintenance functions, all staff and contractors and the implementation preventative maintenance programs in a professional and safe manner.

Your key responsibilities will include:

1. Planning and Budgeting:

  • Responsible for short and long-range planning and organizational goals for the Engineering Department.

  • Ensures the optimal performance of engineering staff. Monitors the work of employees through personal observation.

  • Conducts orientation and training programs for all new and current department employees.

  • Prepares departmental budgets and forecasts to control labour and expenses as required.

  • Ensures all relevant acts and regulations are complied with.

  • Trains staff in safety and emergency procedures.

  • Prepares five and ten-year forecasts of capital expenditures and on-going renovations, taking into consideration life cycle costing and changes in the market orientation of the SBU and its facilities.

  • Prepares monthly report for General Manager and Group Director of Engineering.

2. Policies and Procedures:

  • Conversant with and implements all relevant JI policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for keeping informed of industry innovations and advances in

  • Product research, maintenance and Engineering Department technology so that opportunities for capitalising on such developments are recognised.

  • Implements and supervises ongoing Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) program

​​​​​​​3. Operational Efficiency:

  • Reports to the General Manager on a daily basis providing feedback information and reports as required.

  • Maintains standards and procedures for equipment repairs and maintenance and institutes new procedures to increase efficiency of labor and product use.

  • Maintains an efficient stock control system; requisitions supply as required. Verifies Orders when received and follows up on Orders not delivered on time because of delay or back-order.

  • Implements and Monitors Energy Conservation programs with all Heads of Department.

  • Monitors Maintenance Request system and ensures accurate reporting.

  • Supervises the testing of new products for the Department.

4. Operational Supervision:

  • Supervises and directs the daily activities of all departmental employees and is responsible for the efficient and smooth operation of the Engineering Department.

  • Ensures all staff are trained in the safe operation and use of plant and equipment.

  • Makes periodic checks of completed repair and maintenance work to ensure that established standards have been met.

  • Ensures effective communications within the Department by conducting monthly meetings with all personnel.

  • Ensures that staff are trained and competent to carry out the work allocated to them.

  • Handles grievances, suggestions and complaints by employees and recommends appropriate action.

  • Attends staff and operational meetings.

  • Communicates to the General Manager information regarding expenditure, payroll, the physical condition of the SBU, as well as other information as required.

  • Assists security with guest and employee accidents in the preparation of Incident Reports, recommending corrective action as required.

  • Keeps records of all employees, appraisals, past and current budgets and Maintenance schedules.

5. Co-ordination:

  • Confers and co-operates with other Department Heads to ensure co-ordination of activities in the SBU.

  • Co-ordinates work functions in servicing of available areas with related departments, i.e. the various preventive maintenance programs program. He should communicate with Administration regarding the day-to-day activities of the SBU.

6. Maintenance of Physical Plant and Buildings:

  • Responsible for the co-coordinating of improvements and maintenance of plant and buildings. A key aspect of this is the correct use of the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) program

  • Ensures that all plant and equipment are adequately serviced and maintained to the manufacturer specification.

7. Industry Innovation:

  • Responsible for keeping informed of industry innovations and advances in product research, maintenance, Technical Services Department, and property management in order that opportunities for capitalizing on such developments are recognized.

8. Quality Control:

  • Maintains a high level of quality in products and services through observation and monitors profitability through cost containment, adherence to quality standards, and review of established company policies. Initiates corrective action in designated areas of responsibility.

9. Capital Plant Improvements:

  • Coordinates the construction and installation of capital plant and building improvements with the Projects Department.

10. Fire and Safety:

  • Ensures all Fire Life and Safety requirements are met, and all mandatory 3rd party certification is up to date and recorded.

  • Plays an active role in the occupational health and safety committee for the property.

Financial Accountability

  • To assume responsibility for the cost-effective operation of the P.O.M.E.C department.

  • To assist with the preparation of the annual and revised budget in close cooperation with the Financial Controller and management, commensurate with the operational requirements of the property.

  • To keep accurate records and monitor closely all budget expenditures, to ensure that the budget is adhered to costs strictly controlled, and approval sought prior to expenditure.

  • To allocate and countersign all invoices chargeable to the P.O.M.E.C. budget before being processed and charged.

  • To establish an efficient system for the control and verification of all deliveries to the premises pertaining to the department’s operation.

  • In accordance with finance policies.

About you:

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following experience and qualifications:

  • Mechanical or Electrical Higher diploma or equivalent

  • Certificate in project management

  • Diploma in Engineering management

  • Facility Management System

  • Building Management System

  • Minimum of 5 Years post qualification experience in a 5-star hotel

  • Minimum of 10 years in a supervisory role

  • Middle east experience

  • Previous role in multicultural environment

  • Experienced in Fire & Life safety Systems

  • Financial planning and accounting

  • Project management

  • Interpreting Drawings

  • Knowledge of HVAC Systems
