Advisors are key in assisting students achieve their academic and personal goals. Advisors work collaboratively with faculty and colleagues across campus to provide holistic support to students. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Advising responsibilities, 75% of this position Provide proactive academic advising for students via various formats Facilitate learning and personal development by engaging students in critical, creative, and reflective thinking Connect with students through one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising, group advising, telephone and email communication Guide students through the process of formulating personalized educational plans and strategies for academic success that are reflective of their unique set of values, strengths, interests, and identities Create connection to the value of engagement in co-curricular experiences (eg. internships and co-ops, research opportunities, learning abroad, civic engagement, leadership development, student groups, etc) and how they align with students' academic and career goals Utilize a holistic advising model to guide, challenge, and support students and connect them to resources Utilize and maintain advising records using campus and university student record systems (APLUS, APAS, Schedule Builder, PeopleSoft, Perceptive Content, Slate, etc.) Program Operation, Development, & Student Engagement , approximately 20% of the position Assist with new student orientation, to include providing presentations and meeting with incoming students Represent the college at admission and recruitment events (eg. Admitted Student Day, Bulldog Friday, Campus Preview, Transfer Student Visit Day, etc.) Assist in student success initiatives to improve retention rates, four-year graduation rates, and student satisfaction Assist with program evaluation and assessment Assist with special projects or other duties as assigned in support of the unit and college Professional Development and Service , approximately 5% of the position Stay current in the field of academic advising by pursuing professional development opportunities to maintain knowledge of trends and best practices (e.g., membership in professional associations, attendance at conferences and seminars, write and publish articles, serve on committees and collaborate with other professional groups, etc.) Participate on Student Services, College and University-wide committees. Qualifications Required Qualifications: BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience. Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in higher education and student affairs, college student personnel psychology, counseling, social work, or field transferrable to advising. Evidence of effective relationship-building skills Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work effectively with diverse populations Demonstrated commitment to fostering student learning and applying organization/student development theory to work with students Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice Previous academic advising experience in higher education Knowledge in STEM fields.
