Shire Maintenance Technician in Dunboyne, Ireland

The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the maintenance, diagnoses, calibration, repair and reliability of plant utilities, facilities and equipment for our new state of the art single use multi-product biotech facility in Dunboyne, County Meath, Ireland. This facility will manufacture enzyme replacement and antibody-based therapies for Shire, the leading global biotech company focused on rare diseases.

The primary responsibility of the technician will be to sustain a world class maintenance programme, act as subject-matter-expert in optimising equipment performance, executing planned and unplanned maintenance in an efficient manner and implementing process improvements across the plant.

This is an important role at the plant within the Site Maintenance organisation to help create value for our patients.



  • Preform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks in accordance with site policies and procedures to meet site objectives.

  • Proactively ensure that all Environmental, Health and Safety responsibilities are carried out according to EHS regulations and requirements.

  • Develop and demonstrate specialisms as subject matter expert across multiple technologies.

  • Adept at collating and analysing process and operational performance data and in leading operational equipment improvements.

  • Develop, monitor and review the asset management plan and the standards and procedures for plant assets including the change management process to minimise risk.

  • Advocate for the implementation of the Plant Reliability Program, updating technical standards, developing SOP’s, implementing the risk management process, ensuring right first time philosophy is integrated across the site and within the value-streams.

  • Execution of calibration tasks and the upkeep of calibration standards to comply with site KPI’s.

  • Ensuring that spare parts are appropriated, utilised and managed in a cost effective and efficient manner.

  • Ensures that quality and operational excellence is enshrined into maintenance practices and techniques.

  • Responsible for maintenance commissioning activities for GMP and non-GMP utilities including Boiler, Chillers, Cooling Towers, CIP Skids, Water Systems, Gas, Chemical, process plant and equipment.

  • Undertaking pre-start up safety reviews and ensures the safe start-up of site systems.

  • Review and approval of contractor and vendor turnover packages.

  • On-site walk-downs with contractors and engineers to verify mechanical and electrical completion and commission readiness of plant equipment and processes.

  • Participate in performance review program and development plans.

  • Ensure that maintenance budgets are met and supports annual efficiency targets.


  • Provide maintenance and technical support to ensure stable, efficient and robust operations at the site.

  • Responsible for implementing a best-in-class equipment reliability programme for the site.

  • Support Manufacturing to ensure equipment remains in an operational state with minimal downtime.

  • Troubleshoot equipment, process, facility and utility issues by performing investigations, root-cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventive actions.

  • Implement a reliability-based maintenance program for assets to ensure spare parts inventories are appropriate to supporting manufacturing and prevent unplanned downtime.

  • Implements best-in-class conditioned based maintenance techniques (thermal imaging, temperature, pressure and oil viscosity, vibration analysis) to drive a predictive culture in our reliability programme.

  • Responsible for timely updates of achievements and challenges.

  • Works collaboratively on resolving obstacles and building relationships so as to maintain a highly effective and productive work environment.


  • Coordinates and verifies implementation of maintenance aspects around FAT/SAT and CQV protocols and tasks.

  • Accountable for the execution of maintenance reliability projects and improvements.

  • Provides appropriate technical input to ensure plant and equipment design, commissioning, qualification and validation is executed to reliability maintenance standards.

  • Completes the verification test pack completion reports and documentation (i.e. material and calibration certificates).


  • Collaborates with Manufacturing, Reliability, Facilities, Utilities, Process Development, Automation, Quality Assurance, EHS, Engineering and Validations teams in addressing maintenance issues and recommendations for system modifications, upgrades, retrofits and replacements.

  • Develop a detailed understanding of site plant, processes and equipment to accelerate troubleshooting and resolution of problems.

  • Will utilise Operational Excellence tools and techniques in completing maintenance projects, troubleshooting and for improvements.

  • Establish and maintains best-in-class plant reliability maintenance systems, process and methodologies around the management of assets and plant equipment in accordance with cGMP and GEP’s.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Degree, Diploma, and/or technical certification/ trade in mechanical, electrical or related field – NFQ Level 6.

  • At least 8 years’ experience in a cGMP commercial manufacturing environment.

  • Willingness to work shifts and weekends.

  • Proven ability in using a wide variety of lean tools and problem solving techniques.

  • A background of working in advanced automated manufacturing operations with integrated sophisticated processes would be desirable.
