Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Onsite Pantry Supervisor in DUQUESNE, Pennsylvania

The Onsite Pantry Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank's onsite food pantry, The Market. This role ensures that food is properly ordered, received, stored, and distributed to our guests. The Supervisor will oversee staff and volunteers to maintain inventory, ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, and provide the highest level of service possible to our guests. This position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a commitment to addressing food insecurity.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Distributions Manager as part of a direct service leadership team.
- Participate in the development and execution of the vision for direct food assistance services provided by the Food Bank. Work with Distributions Manager to ensure The Market is operating in alignment with vision and goals.
- Support the development and management of The Market's annual budget and work plan. Execute organizational strategic initiatives centered around the work of the Market.
- Work with the Distributions Manager and team to evaluate new initiatives or ideas designed to provide more efficient or effective hunger relief services. Lead the implementation of new approaches to our work that improve operations and/or guest experience.
- Cultivate a culture of mutual respect and accountability among team members.
- Participate in new employee orientation as needed.
Pantry Operations Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily operations of The Market including inventory management, ordering, receiving orders, stocking, distribution processes, volunteer management and guest services.
- Monitor food supply levels and coordinate with colleagues in Operations to maintain a steady inventory that aligns with the produce, distribution and budgetary goals established by leadership.
- Ensure all food is stored, handled and distributed in accordance with applicable health and safety regulations.
- Work with Operations teams to ensure The Market complies with all requirements of the Allegheny County Health Department and passes the AIB audit.
- Ensure that guest registration, data collection/storage, and food distribution practices abide by all relevant regulatory agencies including Feeding America, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of The Market as well as storage and backstock areas.
- Serve guests directly, ensuring a welcoming and respectful environment for all.
- Collaborate with the Food Bank's Community Engagement team on volunteer recruitment, scheduling, training and retention initiatives.
- Lead efforts to track and report on relevant data related to inventory, distributions, guests served, and other metrics that represent The Market's output and impact.
- Work with the Community Connections team to coordinate the provision of comprehensive services that address needs beyond food.
- Continually seek opportunities to reduce barriers to service for marginalized and underserved populations.
- Continually seek opportunities to provide more culturally connected foods and approaches to service provision.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Work with Distributions Manager and team members on staff schedule to ensure adequate coverage in The Market.
- Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit for open positions, as needed.
- Train staff and volunteers on pantry operations.
- A sign tasks and ensure that all staff working in The Market understand their role and responsibilities.
- Facilitate regularly scheduled check-ins and meetings with staff.
- Work with the Distributions Manager to review and approve timecards.
- Work with the Distributions Manager to complete performance evaluations.
- Coach and support team members through performance shortfalls.
- Manage conflict constructively so that disagreements lead to useful and productive discussions.
- Monitor workload of reporting staff and work with Distributions Manager to assign and/or modify tasks as needed.
- Ensure that The Market staff and volunteers comply with all regulations requiring confidentiality.
- Manage conflicts involving guests, volunteers and/or staff safely, efficiently and discretely, treating all parties involved with respect and courtesy.
- Oversee staff's efforts to orient, train and coordinate volunteers' work in The Market.
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to end hunger and committed to viewing the problem of hunger in a holistic context, including considerations of public health, social justice, diversity, equity and the cultural importance of food.
- Minimum of five years of programmatic and training experience.
- Minimum of two years of experience supervising a formal work team of paid staff.
- Ability to effectively manage people; must demonstrate examples of constructively resolving conflicts among direct reports, across working teams, with peers, volunteers and guests.
- Ability to clearly, tactfully and respectfully communicate and enforce policies, procedures and compliance requirements.
- Ability to prioritize and execute tasks with minimal direction while being flexible to adapt to changing situations and circumstances.
- Must be able to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively handle multiple tasks and solve problems simultaneously.
- Demonstrated conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Ability, experience and willingness to work with diverse populations.
- Ability to work strategically, collaboratively and effectively with staff members required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft office and ability to learn platforms like NetSuite and Link2Feed required.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to obtain safe food handling certification within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain Act 33 and Act 34 certificates.
