Hiring Rate: $17.99/hr
Days: Monday to Thursday, weekly
Hours: Hours will vary and may be weather dependent, not to exceed 30 hours per week.
Stormwater & GIS Services is seeking a temporary part-time staff member for the Water Quality group. The primary duty of this position is to conduct inspections of stormwater drainage system outfalls and assess dry weather discharges for indicators of pollution using field meters and chemical test kits. Outfall assessment is a fast-paced, team-oriented program that relies upon all members working together to accomplish a seasonal goal. The incumbent will be conducting screenings under the supervision and instruction of an experienced full-time specialist. It is important that the incumbent be able to learn quickly and work efficiently.
Additional duties will include the collection of chemical and physical water quality parameters as part of routine ambient monitoring. This program characterizes watersheds and monitors for long-term trends in water quality in and around the City of Durham. Under the supervision and instruction of senior staff, the incumbent will assist in the collection of water samples and physical parameters using sampling equipment and field meters. It is important that the incumbent closely follows written standard operating procedures relating to sample collection.
Other field duties may be assigned depending on program needs and incumbent skills.
All of the above duties are primarily conducted outdoors in varying weather conditions and require traversal of varying terrain types, usually carrying heavy water sample testing equipment. Office work typically consists of: outfall inspections planning using GIS software and field data entry into custom MS Access databases.
Other office tasks may be assigned, depending on program needs and incumbent skills.
Sediment and Erosion Control or HAZWOPER certification will be not required for this position.
Employment is anticipated to begin in early October 2021 and continue through the end of February 2022, depending on workload and available funding. A workweek will be 30 hours, Monday-Thursday, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The incumbent will not report to work during the week of November 25, 2021 (Thanksgiving), the week of December 23, 2021 (Christmas), and the week of December 30, 2021 (New Year).
Duties/Responsibilities
Inspects stormwater drainage system outfalls and tests dry-weather discharges; develops screening work plans; maintains and calibrates water quality monitoring instruments; maps previously unidentified outfalls; screens for pollutants; identifies sources of illegal discharges; and enters results of screenings in a custom MS Access database.
Performs routine ambient water quality monitoring; collects water quality samples according to standard operating procedures; submits samples to laboratory for analysis; diligently records field notes and field meter readings.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Associate’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology, or directly related field
Two years of related experience in surface water quality monitoring, illicit discharge investigation, stormwater infrastructure inspection, dry weather outfall inspection, or any combination of the former.
A valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, acquired within the time frame specified by the City..
The following certifications may be required for positions assigned to storm/surface water: 24-hour OSHA HAZWOPER.
Additional Preferred Skills
Course work in hydrology, biology, aquatic chemistry or related fields;
Experience in dry weather outfall screening, illicit discharge detection and elimination, water quality monitoring, stream monitoring, and geographic information systems.
Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Ability to work cooperatively.
