The City of Durham’s Department of Water Management (DWM) wants YOU to join our team of more than 380 talented and dedicated employees that provide critical water and sewer services for Durham’s 309,000 plus residents. DWM is seeking a seasoned person with a good work ethic and congenial personality to join our industrial plant maintenance team. As part of a two-person crew, the purpose of this position is to perform skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment in a commercial/industrial environment. Corrective maintenance is performed for large electrical motors and controls, electrical switchgear, and other electrical equipment at water and wastewater facilities & over 60 lift stations. Perform Preventive Maintenance on electrical equipment using specialized motor analyzing meters and software to track data and reduce unplanned machine downtime. Other duties include overtime and/or rotation for stand-by/recall, completing administrative duties, and assessing equipment and systems for acceptable performance levels.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performing skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment including troubleshooting fixtures and components; testing for power; replacing lamps and ballasts; replacing and/or installing receptacles and switches; replacing light fixtures; repairing panel boxes; overseeing lift and pump station repairs; assisting with HVAC troubleshooting; repairing wiring; and responding to emergency calls.

  • Performs preventative and general maintenance on electrical, HVAC, safety, utility, and related systems, equipment, and devices; diagnoses and troubleshoots issues; utilizes computer-controlled and specialized programs, systems, and software; installs repairs, replaces, tests, and/or maintains equipment and systems; monitors contractor operations; and ensures compliance with applicable safety and operational requirements, policies, and procedures.

  • Responds to emergency requests and performs emergency repairs; coordinates repairs with vendors and other staff; and identifies and troubleshoots system or equipment malfunctions and issues escalated by lower-level staff.

  • Maintains records; gathers information; monitors and tracks supply usage; and obtains price quotes for repairs.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED, HiSET, TASC)

  • One additional year of technical or vocational training

  • Three years of related journey trades experience.

  • Valid, unrestricted, North Carolina driver's license "or" if you currently have another states driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire

  • Color vision required for some assignments.

CONTINUING EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to complete job-related training including (but not limited to) forklift operation, lock out/tag out, confined space, ladder safety, respirator and emergency evacuation training.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • One year of CMMS program experience, familiarity using an Infrared thermography camera, Ultrasound probe equipment, and other hand held electrical meters.

  • Experience working in an industrial, manufacturing, or water utility preferred.

  • For positions assigned to electrical repairs, the North Carolina Electrical Limited license is preferred.

  • For positions assigned to HVAC, the CFC universal refrigerant certification is preferred.

  • Work environment works in a small group and works closely with 2 or more employees

  • Work environment requires employees to report to work daily at different locations and will be exposed to strong/bad odors which are present at sewage water treatment plants and lift stations
