Position Summary

The starting hourly rate for this position is $22.97 with an increase to $25.52 after successful completion of a six-month probationary period. This position is not eligible for remote work.

This position will lead the processing operations in a material recovery facility by directing and performing the moving, sorting, transporting, unloading, counting, storing, and preparation of recycling and refuse materials. This position will safely operate university vehicles and equipment to process material in addition to tracking weights and material for data collection. Direct, oversee, and train student, temporary, and on-call employees. This position will direct the daily work of the staff of 10 -20 sort line and MRF students. Assign and oversee the work of full-time employees. Divert material from landfill employing highest-use model of reuse and recycle. Assist the Service Manager III with the scheduling of staff and daily labor activities. Maintain vermicompost operations. Manage the processing, condition, and storage of containers.

Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.

  • Two years of satisfactory experience as a driver of a vehicle with a minimum of 60,000 GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and an Air Brake System.

  • One year of satisfactory experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator/Hauler or equivalent experience.

  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license.

  • Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

  • Possession of a valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License with applicable endorsements with no restrictions in Category “L and “O” and a medical certificate to comply with State of Michigan requirements or a Michigan Class B Commercial Driver’s license. Applicants must have a good driving record and submit a copy of their operator's license and medical card for a motor vehicle check.

  • This position requires, or will require prior to the completion of the probationary period: knowledge of basic personal computer terminology and operations, and the ability to use e-mail and the Internet.

Summary of Physical Demands

Lifting material from floor and placing in carts. Lifting and dumping recycling containers, up to 75 lbs.

Carrying surplus items and recyclables from rooms or outside to carts; up to 50 lbs a distance of 200'.

Pushing carts of surplus, recycling, trash, and food waste using carts or dollies, up 300 lb. a distance of 200'.

Climbing stairs to get on and off trucks and up to the sort line.
