Network Engineer I

Position Summary

The MSU IT Infrastructure Support team consists of experienced networking professionals from various backgrounds. They are tasked with the planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of the critical infrastructure essential to the university's daily functions. Our mission is centered on the stewardship and administration of the university's infrastructure, which includes wired and wireless networks, DDI (DNS, DHCP, and IPAM), switching and routing, and telecommunications. The team is instrumental in maintaining the technological foundation that supports the university's operations.

The perspective candidate reports to the Assistant Director and for an Engineer I role, the duties could be streamlined as follows:

  • Monitor network performance and capacity

  • Ensure system availability and reliability

  • Assist in the administration of various devices and services

  • Assist in maintaining system software and configurations

  • Provide Level-1 support and troubleshooting

  • Follow configuration and change management policies

  • Collaborate with users and team members for issue resolution

  • Participate in on-call duties as needed

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Participate in highly complex professional support in one or more of the following information technology areas: software development, computer/systems operations, customer support, systems administration, systems software support, hardware support, communications network support, database administration, or a related technical area,

  • Some knowledge of both wired and wireless infrastructure,

  • Some knowledge of networking protocols like TCP/IP, 802.11, 802.1x, DHCP,

  • Some hands-on experience with monitoring, network diagnostic and network analytics tools

  • A four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field,

  • Network certifications a plus,

  • Has some experience in DDI

  • Has some experience in identity-first or identity-based networking

  • Has some experience worked in networking at a higher education institution
