Position Summary

The Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology seeks a half-time Research Technologist II employee to work in the laboratory of Dr. Annette Rowe. The candidate should have experience working with microbial cell cultures (Bacterial and or Archaeal), aseptic technique, and molecular techniques (PRC, gels, SDS-Page gels, etc.). Experience handling anaerobic cultures, performing quantitative assays, data analysis, and scientific writing are preferred. This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with possible extension and increased hours contingent on available funding.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Microbiology or other related field; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience performing basic research techniques specific to the area of research employment such as: Anaerobic microbiology, gas chromatography and/or ion chromatography , including the use and calibration of related equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification, and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals specific to the area of research employment.

Desired Qualifications

B.S. or M.S. degree in Microbiology or a related field is desired as well as experience in Anaerobic microbiology, gas chromatography and/or ion chromatography.

Summary of Health Risks

Some duties in this position may include exposure to the following health risks:

  • Occasional use of fixatives (i.e., paraformaldehyde), solvents for toxins

  • Occasional lifting of heavy materials including moving compressed gas tanks less than 20 lbs

  • Pushing/Pulling compressed gas canisters into wall brackets and or spaced for instruments

  • Lots of standing
