Michigan State University(MSU) Specialist - Advisor-Continuing in East Lansing, Michigan

Position Summary

 

This twelve-month Academic Specialist-Advisor position is an entry-level position in the continuing system within the College of Natural Science Undergraduate Academic and Student Affairs Office. The selected individual will serve as a Human Biology and Pre-Health Advisor, joining a team of academic advising professionals committed to working together to promote student success. The team supports students pursuing the human biology degree, as well as students across the university who are pursuing admission to professional school in healthcare fields. They provide individual and group advising related to enrollment, academic planning, and admission criteria for professional health programs. 

The Human Biology and Pre-Health Advising team works collaboratively to provide accurate and timely information to a diverse population of students through multiple modes of communication. They also interface regularly with faculty and campus partners and serve as a resource to advising units across campus. The selected individual will advise a student organization, participate in New Student Orientation, and represent the College of Natural Science at various advising programs and recruitment events throughout the year.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advise human biology and pre-health undergraduate students at various stages of their academic careers, providing assistance on a range of topics including enrollment, course planning, co-curricular engagement, career exploration, and interpretation of academic policies.
  • Guide pre-health students in a variety of majors through the process of preparing for and applying to graduate/professional schools.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of student interaction.

``` - Engage with student success initiatives via unit, department, and college/university collaborations. - Plan and implement group programming tailored to the needs of current human biology and pre-health students. - Participate in College and University events, including but not limited to Colloquium, Commencement, Admitted Students Day, and presentations to prospective students and families. - Communicate effectively with various audiences using email, social media, video conferencing software, small group, and individual sessions as appropriate. - Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures, and technological tools related to academic advising.

Minimum Requirements

 

  1. Master's Degree in education/higher education, student affairs, counseling, the sciences, or other relevant field.
  2. Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Commitment to or experience with advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
