Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL Engine team is looking for experienced technical experts in relational databases, who are excited about building large scale database systems that run across thousands of servers across multiple datacenters worldwide. These are technical leadership positions where you will own significant system software components critical to our industry leading database services architected for the cloud. This Principal Engineer would own the architectural vision and strategy of the Query Processing and Optimization area for the Aurora PostgreSQL engine.

Key job responsibilities

You will build the architectural vision and lay down the strategy of the Query Processing and Optimization area for the Aurora PostgreSQL engine while working across the broader organization and with other Principal and Sr Principal Engineers to get it adopted. You will help drive the evaluation, design, development and enhancement of an already successful service and align the organizational roadmap to deliver on the strategy. In the Principal Engineer role you will be able to influence the organization’s priorities, mentor senior engineers, collaborate with other Principal Engineers and solve complex business and technical challenges with “future proof” solutions, rolling up your sleeves when necessary to get things done.

As an AWS Principal Engineer, you’ll be a technical leader. You’ll help establish technical standards and drive Amazon’s overall technical architecture and engineering practices. You’ll work on Amazon’s hardest problems, building high quality, architecturally sound systems that are aligned with our business needs. You will immerse yourself in your team’s entire software development lifecycle to have a hands-on impact. You’ll think globally when building systems, ensuring AWS builds high performing, scalable systems that fit well together. Amazon Principal Engineers are pragmatic visionaries who can translate business needs into workable technology solutions. You will take on the most challenging design and development problems personally and lead by example to deliver exceptional results that reflect a keen understanding of our customers’ needs and our business vision.

As an AWS Principal Engineer you’ll be expected to:

• Serve as a technical lead on our most demanding, cross-functional projects.

• Ensure the quality of architecture and design of systems.

• Functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions.

• Fully and completely understand system interdependencies and limitations.

• Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.

• Leverage knowledge of internal and industry prior art in design decisions.

• Effectively research and benchmark Amazon technology against other competing systems in the industry.

• Contribute intellectual property through patents

• Assist in the career development of others, actively mentoring individuals and the community on advanced technical issues and helping managers guide the career growth of their team members.

• Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience.

Basic Qualifications

  • Knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms

Preferred Qualifications

  • 13+ years of software engineering with a proven track record of leading large-scale projects experience

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $180,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $311,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
